The long-awaited opening of the Nevada State College at Henderson today marks the end of a bumpy road and the beginning of what higher education officials hope will be a string of state colleges in the future.
Of the 14 bachelor's degrees offered at the state college, about 60 percent of the founding class chose education and nursing as their major -- the two areas of emphasis the college was created to serve.
Nevada State College at Henderson was originally slated for 500 full-time students but has fallen shy of that goal.

Nevada State College President Richard Moore, a lightning rod for criticism during his seven years with the state's higher education system, took regents by surprise Monday by announcing his resignation six months before the opening of the Henderson school.
Nevada State College at Henderson is on track for a Sept. 3 opening despite obstacles such as a switch in locations, low initial enrollment and the resignation of its president, college officials and consultants said Wednesday.

Nevada State College is the only Southern Nevada institution to offer speech pathology, and the only institution in the state to offer a bachelor of science degree in psychology, which focuses more on the "hard science," research side of the field, Erika Beck, chairwoman of the psychology department, said.
Enrollment numbers show that these other majors at the Nevada State College tend to be more balanced in their female to male ratios, though women outnumber men in all but biology and public administration.

In order to be admitted to the clinical program in Nursing, students have to complete satisfactorily a series of pre-requisites that include the college’s general education lower division requirements as well as significant coursework in the sciences, social sciences, and math.
Given the ever-increasing general population in Nevada and particularly the older adults, there will continue to be significant growth in the number and kind of health providers in the area.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Nevada State College in southern Nevada is planning a joint venture with Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno to provide baccalaureate degrees not available through the University of Nevada, Reno.
The plan calls for the state college and TMCC to build a 60,000-square-foot facility at the Redfield Campus in south Reno, with classrooms and laboratories staffed by instructors from both institutions, TMCC President Philip Ringle said.
With the addition of Nevada's state college, it might be the only one like it in the country, Ringle said.
