  Amazon River
The Amazon originates from a cliff at the Nevado Mismi, with a sole sign of a wooden cross.
The waters from Nevado Mismi flow into the Quebradas Carhuasanta and Apacheta, which flow into the Río Apurímac which is a tributary of the Ucayali which later joins the Marañón to form the Amazon proper.
Support bases were established in Cuzco, in the mountains, Ericipa on the Pacific coast and in the cordillera de Chilca at Calioma for the Amazons origin high in the mountains.

A CRYSTAL stream that trickles down the rock wall of the 18,000ft Nevado Mismi peak in the southern Peruvian Andes has been identified as the source of the Amazon by a team of American-led scientists.
From the Nevado Mismi the Amazon starts a winding journey through a grass-and-moss-covered Andean valley to be joined by other streams and rivers before meandering towards the Atlantic through the world's largest rainforest.
Nevado Mismi fits both these definitions," said Andrew Johnston, a geographer with the Smithsonian Institution who took part in the trip.

French explorer Michel Perrin claimed in 1953 that the source could be found on the Huagra Mountain, while English journalist Nicholas Asheshov and parachutist John Ridgway believed that the mountain in question was Minaspata and yet others pointed to the Vilafro Lake or the Huarajo stream.
Carlos Peñaherrera del Águila, claimed that the location under discussion was located in Nevado Mismi.
Two years later cartographers from National Geographic Magazine identified on maps that the farthest point from the mouth of the Amazon, and therefore the place where the river was born, was Nevado Mismi, the place mentioned by Peñaherrera.

BBC News | SCI/TECH | Amazon source confirmed
It flows from a 5,597 metre- (18,363 foot-) high peak called Nevado Mismi, which has now been surveyed by the explorers using satellite navigation equipment.
A National Geographic team had established Mismi as the river's source in 1971, but in recent years the possibility had been raised that the actual source was a different stream flowing from another mountain.
Smithsonian Institution geographer Andrew Johnson said the source of the Amazon could be defined as the most distant point in the drainage basin from which surface water ran year round, or the furthest point from which water could possibly flow to the Atlantic.

Mismi was identified as the source of the Amazon in a 1971 National Geographic expedition, but in recent years at least one other stream, flowing from a separate peak, has been in contention as the Amazon’s ultimate source.
The GPS equipment used by the expedition is considered accurate to within 1 to 5 meters; this is the first time such high-precision equipment is known to have been used in this remote area.
“Nevado Mismi fits both of these definitions.” The mapping effort found another stream to be slightly longer than that flowing from Mismi, but it was discounted as the source because it does not flow year-round in its upper reaches.
