Neverness - David Zindell - Review - Never say Never..
The canvas upon which the action takes place is masterfully drawn; there are hints of greater powers in the galaxy, intriguing glimpses into the lives of alien races, the descriptions of the city of Neverness itself are superb and the characterisations are rich and varied.
Neverness is told in the first person from the perspective of Mallory himself.
Neverness is a very human story, set in a future where mankind has changed, yet some truths still seem the same.

The Fire Sermons: David Zindell's A Requiem for Homo Sapiens Trilogy
Neverness' planet, Icefall, is only one of three thousand Civilized Worlds, to which the Order supplies the best interstellar Pilots and other savants.
In Neverness, it becomes clear that the millennia-long stability of the Civilized Worlds is contrived, and under threat: the Timekeeper, Lord of the Order, is covertly restraining the evolutionary development of mankind, while out in the wider galaxy experiments in godhood have already reached fruition.
Mallory Ringess remains the narrator, but is almost never on stage; he has apparently transcended the mortal arena, and so his son, Danlo, again a pilot of the Order, must reprise and complete his father's explorations.

The Humblest Blog on the Net
Neverness is certainly epic in scope, describing both a far future world of Clarke's-3rd-Law-applicable advanced science, but also taking us through the daily lives of Neanderthals and their icy world.
Pilots are at the core of a quasi-religious Order seeking knowledge and enlightenment through study of the mind and the universe, based in the fantastic city of Neverness on the frozen planet of Icefall.
Set the first part of the book entirely in the world of Neverness and its high-technology and mathematics, set the second primarily in the world of Icefell's Neanderthals, and mix up the third as necessary having established the settings in the previous two.

David Zindell interviewed - infinity plus non-fiction
When I began writing Neverness, I realized that in order to show the pilots of the Order as having their beings steeped in the strangeness of this otherworld, I was going to have to call upon, and try to convey, this secret beauty.
I never state explicitly the nature of his transcendence, but it's quite clear that with all these nano-computers replacing parts of his brain, he is becoming something more than human in form and possibly in function.
In fact, I had originally conceived Neverness as a sort of Morte D'Arthur in space: Neverness, the city, was Camelot, and the pilots of the Order were to be knights zipping around the universe in search of the Holy Grail: the Elder Eddas.

While "Neverness" beats this novel for originality, this one is better in every other way.
"Neverness" was a good read; "The Broken God" started well, but got terribly bogged down towards the end; "The Wild" is absolutely wonderful.
While "The Broken God" had more philosophy in it and "Neverness" followed a more classic Sci-Fi pattern, "The Wild" is the perfect mix between the two.

David Zindell: Neverness - an infinity plus review
Corny it may be as subject matter, but Zindell's almost spiritual handling of the revelations, as Mallory and his friends journey toward a deeper understanding of the universe and themselves, is something to behold.
He's a young, impetuous, and sometimes absolutely infuriating man, yet Zindell has the reader empathising with him as he goes through a succession of physical and mental trials.
Brutally honest, brave, egotistical and often plain stupid, Mallory's flaws are held up for all to see, and in him Zindell has created a believable protagonist.

Neverness had me hooked from the opening line and never let go.
Yeah, Neverness, and the follow-up trillogy, deserve to be ranked amongst the classics absolutely.
The city itself, as well as the planet, and all the interwoven science and philosophy, is one of the most complete and rounded - not to mention inventive - societies I've come accross in fiction.

 David Zindell, War in Heaven
What makes the Neverness Quartet (as one might dub War in Heaven and its three predecessors) so remarkable is that it is, simultaneously, an admirably ambitious, luminously poetic work of philosophical space opera and an interminable religiose wallow.
Neverness is an expansive, shrewd, colourful reworking of earlier genre material, boasting gnomic chapter epigraphs out of Frank Herbert, aliens a la Silverberg, stylistic exuberance after Delany, exoticism according to Vance.
Concerns of genuine import are at stake; the narrative delivers a rich succession of densely told confrontations, trials, and epiphanies.

If you want to convey the experience of, say, confusion, you need a concrete situation that contains it, and show us the problems in action - a situation between younger person and authority, or between peers, whatever, where the emotional impact you want is in the story, the situation, and not the words.

[Brainstorming] Gaming David Zindell's Neverness? - RPGnet Forums
The thing is that Neverness is so unique as a sci-fi setting, it's hard to think of a game that currently supports such a universe.
Neverness is the most convoluted, unnecessarily complicated scifi universe I've ever seen.
I presume you'd be playing in a pre-Mallory Neverness (because despite the sheer amount of detail presented in the book, there are really only three settings detailed: space, Neverness, and the arctic wastes, and the first two essentially disappear after Mallory solves the universe).
