Neverwhere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Neverwhere is an urban fantasy television series by Neil Gaiman.
Neverwhere was first broadcast on BBC Two from September 12, 1996.
Neverwhere is the story of an ordinary London man named Richard Mayhew, and his bizarre journeys through the dangerous London "underworld".

Its 20 chapters unfold a tale of mass assassination, murderous stalking, sleuthing, court intrigue, monsters, betrayal, alienation, friendship, and, of course, that alternative universe.
And Neverwhere's prose doesn't sparkle as it must to transcend its sword-and-sorcery genre conventions: an endangered princess, a hero who's a stranger in a strange land, a canny female berserker, a duplicitous overlord (who at least in this case is a fallen angel).
What Neverwhere has going for it is location and a handful of memorable characters.

Neverwhere starts with quite disturbing prologues, which decribe enough to get the reader going.
One night he stumbles on a wounded girl, and his whole life changes as he is drawn into the Neverwhere: a world inhabited with outcasts and derelicts, who have fallen through the gaps of time and space to this wondrous world under London.
The geography of Neverwhere is tied into the Underground (London Metro) map and its names.

Neverwhere has some of the flavor of the de Lint-esque faërie-overlapping-reality stories, only (in my opinion) it's much better.

Neil Gaiman explains the underexposed, too-sharp look of his six-part, three-hour BBC miniseries Neverwhere early on his DVD commentary track: The 1996 show was shot on video but lit for film, with the understanding that it would receive post-production filtering, which was later withheld.
Neverwhere follows a common fantasy theme: the fish-out-of-water tale of an unhappy mundane dragged into a fanciful hidden world.
Some of Neverwhere's humor will be lost on Americans, who are unlikely to be familiar with the real-world versions of the Blackfriars and Knightsbridge tube stations, or to be tickled by the untoward notion that they actually house a sect of fl friars and a knight's bridge, respectively.

Time and space in Neverwhere are by far less straight and normal than in our reality.
Ground level alleys may end at doors leading to the lowest levels of the catacombs underneath the city while a set of rungs in a wall in the sewers may lead to the highest roofs.
Somehow, though, people who meet in Neverwhere always agree as to what time it is, although they may have experienced the timeflow differently when they were apart.

It definitely has that Neverwhere feel to it, and though at times it can be corny and you can definitely tell what era it was made in, I was greatly satisfied with it and would gladly watch it again.
One of the pros is that Neverwhere-televised follows the Neverwhere novel almost perfectly (granted without the beautifully imagery which set Neverwhere apart from the competition).
