"FOR VALOUR" AT FUGITIVES' DRIFT - South African Military History Society - Journal
Coghill's diary, miraculously recovered on the battlefield after the carnage was over, and quoted by his nephew Sir Patrick Coghill in his memoir "Whom the Gods Love", he had injured his knee when on reconnaissance with Lord Chelmsford the previous afternoon.
Nevill Coghill's heroic conduct in endeavouring to save his brother officer's life, they would have been recommended to Her Majesty for the Victoria Cross had they survived.
Coghill is shown wearing his dark blue patrol jacket which helped him to reach the Buffalo crossing in safety, and is depicted with his newly grown beard, of which he wrote in his last surviving letter, that it was now a presentable Van Dyke but that he would be thankful to take it off.

On 22 January 1879 after the disaster of the Battle of Isandhlwana, South Africa, Lieutenant Coghill joined another officer (Teignmouth Melvill) who was trying to save the Queen's Colour of the Regiment.

The Canterbury Tales (Bantam Classics) | Geoffrey Chaucer | 700 years old and still going strong   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Nevill Coghill's brilliant modern English translation of Chaucer's masterpiece, 'The Canterbury Tales,' has always been a bestseller and it's easy to understand why.
Those new to Chaucer would therefore be well advised, after reading and enjoying Nevill Coghill's rendering, to learn how to read Middle English _aloud_ as soon as possible by listening to one of the many excellent recordings (one of the best is by Robert Ross on Caedmon).
Coghill certainly captures the spirit of Chaucer, but modern English cannot really convey the full flavor and intensity of the original.

Nevill Coghill had been my tutor at Exeter and, by this time, his translation of The Canterbury Tales had already become famous through being broadcast on the BBC’s Third Programme and published by Penguin in 1951.
Nevill Coghill and I then rewrote parts of my play and we based the framework around the themes of love, lust and marriage.
Nevill Coghill’s The Canterbury Tales was a superb translation because it was so close to the original but also, as and other actors found, it was supremely speakable and flowing.

The Canterbury Tales (Penguin Classics) by Geoffrey Chaucer, Nevill Coghill (Translator)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
There is a strong, practical side to Chaucer's writing, sophisticated yet not aloof and removed from the affairs of the world, cultured yet in tune with the better (and more interesting) aspects of the common people, too.
This edition by Nevill Coghill is designed for those who only want the Canterbury Tales, not the other writings of Chaucer, but want a set of the complete tales and prologue from standard texts.
This is a fairly standard version that is useful for students - the Penguin classics have long been a staple for undergraduate and general readership, and this volume fits the bill nicely.

Nevill Coghill's brilliant modern English translation of Chaucer's 'The Canterbury Tales' has always been a bestseller and it's easy to understand why.
His range was wide, and the striking thing about Coghill's translations are how amazingly faithful they are to the spirit of the originals - at times bawdy and hilariously funny, at other times more serious and moving when Chaucer shifts to a more poignant mode as in 'Troilus and Criseyde.'
Those new to Chaucer would therefore be well advised, after reading and enjoying Nevill Coghill's renderings, to learn how to read Middle English _aloud_ as soon as possible by listening to one of the many excellent recordings.
