In 1949 Neville Marriner founded the Virtuoso String Trio, and together with Thurston Dart, he founded the Jacobean Ensemble.
While playing as a principal in the London Symphony Orchestra Neville Marriner founded the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields in 1959, and from the concertmaster's seat as the director of this ensemble he gravitated towards conducting.
From 1969 to 1979, Neville Marriner was also musical director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, from 1971 to 1973 deputy conductor of the Northern Symphony Orchestra, from 1979 to 1986 musical director of the Minnesota Orchestra and from 1986 to 1989 principal conductor of South German Radio Symphony Orchestra.

This recording, overall is very well done with great orchestration by Marriner on a technical level and a satisfactory cast that moves the thing along but I did feel it was lacking.
As if all this weren't enough, Neville Marriner shows why he is considered by many to be the greatest interpreter of Mozart in living memory.
Marriners conducting, as usual, is brilliant, but the short comings of the cast (on all the principle roles) does not compensate for the brilliant conducting.

Marriner trained as a violinist and held appointments with the Philharmonia Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra (he was principal second violin in the LSO from 1956-58).
In July 1962 another LP was made — more Baroque string concertos (Manfredini, Avison), and in November 1963 Marriner and the Academy made their first recording for the ARGO label.
Their recordings have sold in huge quantities and have won numerous awards and represents one of the most substantial legacies of a conductor with one orchestra.

Neville Marriner has been criticised for his fast tempi but I think his conducting of these four Haydn masses is very good indeed.
One of my first experiences with classical music concerts was a performance of Haydns "Creation" conducted by Neville Marriner.
From this concert I had the impression that Marriner has a faible for rather fast tempi - as far as classical choral works are concerned, but I have to revise this opinion.
