eMedicine - Nevus Sebaceus : Article by Anwar Al Hammadi
Nevus sebaceus is usually noted as a solitary lesion at birth or in early childhood, whereas the characteristic features may not develop until puberty.
At birth or in early infancy, nevus sebaceus appears as a hairless, solitary, linear or round, slightly raised, pinkish, yellow, orange, or tan plaque, with a smooth or somewhat velvety surface.
Nevus syringocystadenomatosus papilliferus may be difficult to distinguish at clinical examination, although the surface tends to be pink and nodular rather than yellow and velvety.

The oral halo nevus appears as a central pigmented papule or macule with a surrounding zone of pallor which may be as much as 1.5 cm.
The oral Spitz nevus has the same histopathology as its cutaneous counterpart, with the general appearance of a compound nevus with zonal differentiation from the superficial to deep portions of the nodule.

It is important to differentiate this lesion from malignant blue nevus and malignant melanoma on the basis of presence or absence of severe nuclear pleomorphism, nucleoli, mitotic activity and necrosis.
Cellular blue nevus is a distinctive variant of blue nevus suspected of being malignant because of its large size and intense pigmentation.
Surgery was performed almost 20 yrs after occurrence of the nevus and during the surgery it was impossible to remove all the tumor tissue because of the involvement of vital structures.

Nevus (or naevus) is a general term that refers to a number of different, usually benign, pigmented lesions of the skin.
Melanocytic nevus: Nevus cells (melanocytes) are normally localized in the basal layer of the epidermis.
Junctional nevus: located just superficial to the junction of the epithelium and the underlying connective tissue, they are flat and not detected by palpation.

Nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn (NSJ) is a benign, congenital hamartoma that often presents at birth, appears to regress in childhood, and grows during puberty, suggesting possible hormonal control.

Skin Cancer Information - ATYPICAL MOLE = DYSPLASTIC NEVUS
A nevus (mole) may be congenital, meaning the nevus existed probably at birth or finally arose to the surface and became noticeable within the first year or so of life.
When a congenital nevus is seen under the microscope (one hopes by a trained dermatopathologist), usually small nests of relatively round fairly clear cells are seen in a large group that is fairly closely bound at the surface and sides.
An AM is a nevus that shares some or all of the features that should be concerning for malignant melanoma, which are in essence the A, B, C, Ds: "A" for asymmetry, "B" for border irregularity, "C" for variation in color and "D" for diameter over 6mm (1/4 of an inch).

Nevus Outreach co-founder Kevin Williams envisioned a place within nevus.org where there would be content especially for people with nevi and their family members.

 Epidermal Nevus
Epidermal nevi are hamartomas that are characterized by hyperplasia of the epidermis and adnexal structures.[1] These nevi may be classified into a number of distinct variants, which are based on clinical morphology, extent of involvement, and the predominant epidermal structure in the lesion.
Verrucous epidermal nevi, especially if extensive, may be associated with the epidermal nevus syndrome, a disease complex consisting of various developmental abnormalities of the skin and eyes, as well as the central nervous, skeletal, cardiovascular, and urogenital systems.[2] Rarely, malignant transformation to basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas may be seen.[3]
Nevus sebaceous includes many of the surface findings of verrucous epidermal nevus, but also contains malformations of the dermis, most prominently, hyperplasia and malpositioning of the sebaceous glands.

 Bathing trunk nevus
A bathing trunk nevus is a darkly pigmented, disfiguring, often hairy patch of skin (nevus) present at birth, which may cover an extremely large area of the body.
Bathing trunk nevi are thought to be caused by spontaneous mutations or other events during fetal development, but in some families, the frequent appearance of these lesions suggests that they may be genetically inherited.

A halo nevus is a lesion with a centrally placed nevus surrounded by a white halo of depigmented (loss of pigment) skin.
The trigger or cause of spontaneous pigment loss in a halo nevus is not known; however, pigment loss is the result of an immunologic process in which melanocytes are destroyed (pigment-producing cells).

 Choroidal Nevus
A choroidal nevus is a benign, pigmented patch of tissue that may or may not be elevated.
A choroidal nevus has no impact on vision, so for the most part, it is completely asymptomatic and often only discovered by chance when a person visits their optometrist for a regular eye exam.
A choroidal nevus that becomes malignant may produce symptoms, which include distorted vision (metamorphopsia), flashes of light (photopsia), and floaters.

The balloon cells in a balloon cell nevus may be indistinguishable from the balloon cells in a balloon cell melanoma.
Therefore, the distinction between a balloon cell nevus and a balloon cell melanoma must be made on the basis of other criteria.
An isolated cluster of balloon cells is sometimes found in the background of a nevus, particularly a congenital nevus, in a manner analogous to the cells that form the distinctive part of lesions that have been designated as clonal nevi, deep penetrating nevi, and variants of combined nevi.

nevus with histologic halo reaction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
It is better to speak of a nevus having the histologic halo reaction rather than a halo nevus because many of the nevi that have this reaction do not have a halo clinically.
The histologic halo reaction is heralded by dense lymphocytic infiltration of the nevus.
The combination of nevus cells and lymphocytes may expand the superficial dermis to a larger degree than is usually seen in ordinary lichenoid reactions or in dysplastic nevi.

Congenital Nevomelanocytic Nevus - Causes And Treatment
Congenital and acquired nevomelanocytic nevi are presumed to occur as the result of a developmental defect in neural crest-derived melanoblasts.
This defect probably occurs after 10 weeks in utero but before the sixth uterine month; the occurrence of the "split" nevus of the eyelid is an indication that nevomelanocytes migrating from the neural crest were in place in this site before the eyelids split (24 weeks).
Small Nevi Nevi <1.5 cm that are not known to be present at birth should be assumed to be acquired and be managed according to the appearance and growth pattern.

A nevus (beauty mark, mole, freckle) can be found on the skin and in the eyes of many humans.
Since a choroidal nevus can turn into a choroidal melanoma, and since choroidal melanomas are more common in sunny areas, it is reasonable to wear ultraviolet blocking sunglasses.
Depending on the appearance of the nevus, patients should have their eyes examined once to twice a year to check for any change in size.

Dysplastic Nevus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Background: Although a nevus with the microscopic features of a 'dysplastic nevus' is commonly seen, the nomenclature used to describe such a lesion has been thought to be inconsistent.
In each nevus, a numeric value of 1 was assigned when each of the studied parameters was present and a value of 0 was assigned when each of these parameters was absent; on the basis of the final scores, nevi were divided in six different classes (classes 0-5).
The dysplastic nevus cannot be considered a distinct clinicopathologic entity because histologic dysplasia is found in a range of nevi that may or may not show clinical atypia.
