It is an English Bible translation that was produced by members of the Roman Catholic biblical scholars in cooperation with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The original languages were translated into English by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine according to the principles of Vatican II for use in the liturgy.
In 2000 the 1991 New American Bible with Psalms and revised New Testament was modified by a committee of the Holy See and the Bishops for use in the Latin-Rite Catholic liturgy.

At that time a new translation from the Vulgate, called the Confraternity Version, was already underway in America, the New Testament having been published in 1941.
And so, although the NAB is the "official" translation of the U.S. Conference of Bishops, it became necessary for the Scripture portions included in the liturgy of the English Mass to be revised.
The bishops had the NAB updated to the Revised New American Bible (RNAB), but Rome had objections to that and hurriedly appointed a committee to fix it up into what might be called the Amended Revised New American Bible (ARNAB), which will soon become mandatory in lectionary use.

It wasn't until 1548 at the Roman Catholic Council of Trent that the Apocrypha was declared to be actual Scripture, in reaction to the Protestant Bibles.
So the translators were careful to separate the Apocrypha from the Bible, putting it in a separate section between the Old and New Testaments, with each page clearly labeled, “Apocrypha.” The last page of II Maccabees, in the 1611 King James reads, “End of Apocrypha.” Then it returns to God’s inspired words in Matthew.
But the Roman Catholic Bible is a perverted Alexandrian Egyptian Bible, not a preserved Antiochian Bible, like the King James.

When my then-fiancee was studying New Testament Greek in the mid-80s, she would sometimes check her translation against the various English translations I owned, as well as against the Vulgate.
She quickly found that the NAB was totally unreliable and was better characterized as a paraphrase-cum-exegesis than as a translation at all.
