The name New Amsterdam was chosen because most of the colonists originated from the province of Amsterdam in Holland.
The New Amsterdam Public Hospital: designed by Ceasar Castellani, a Maltese architect, employed by the Public Works Department of British Guiana during the 19th century, this edifice is one of the most beautiful structures in Guyana.
In 1838 the present structure was built when the Scots aquired a plot of land to erect a church and later a school to cateer for the population of New Amsterdam.

The first Nieuw Amsterdam, as it then was, was situated about fifty-six miles up the Berbice river on the right bank, and before the 1763 uprising, comprised a Court of Policy building, a warehouse, an inn, two smithies, a bakery, a Lutheran church and a number of houses, among other buildings.
In terms of bye-laws, the little township was a pioneer in several respects; it boasted the first sanitation regulations on record (no privies near the public path, drains to be dug and places kept weeded) and the first price controls in the only hostelry in town.
What perhaps would enhance it both from the point of view of tourism as well as raising the historical consciousness of young people, would be if a photographic exhibition of New Amsterdam in earlier times were mounted, or some other kind of exercise recalling its past undertaken.

In 1976 the Government of Guyana published two companion collections of poetry, The Madwoman of Papine, which contained mainly his secular poems ranging over his Caribbean experiences, and The Friend, which contained his religious and philosophical poems, written in the process of discovering the teachings of the Sufis.
Snowscape With Signature, a selection of the poems written between 1952-1992, was published by Peepal Tree in 1993, with an introductory memoir by Mervyn Morris.
