 Baltimore's History
Baltimore, the 12th largest city in the United States, is named "Charm City" for its residents well-established concern for the quality of life.
Baltimore was infrequently touched by military operations, but the end of the Civil War found it suffering nearly as much as many of the cities of the former Confederacy.
Baltimore County, named for Lord Baltimore's Barony of Baltimore in the Kingdom of Ireland, first appeared in the records about 1659, although the exact date of the county's establishment is not known.

Settled by Europeans in 1661 (the Susquehanna Indians lived in the area before that), Baltimore Town was founded in 1729 when the Maryland General Assembly bought a 60-acre tract on the Patapsco River.
On the evening of September 13, 1814, Baltimore attorney Francis Scott Key, acting as a hostage negotiator, was aboard a ship about three miles from Fort McHenry, one of the Baltimore's chief defenses during the War of 1812.
Baltimore is now the 13th largest city in the country.

 Railriding in New Freedom, Pennsylvania
According to printed narratives (available at the New Freedom, PA museum/station), the line was chartered in 1828 as the Baltimore and Susquehanna.
The states of Pennsylvania and Maryland eventually created a rail trail along the route, including the "still active" York to New Freedom, PA segment.
South of New Freedom to the Pennsylvania state line, a single track is still in place but it is severed from the rail network and at most grade crossings.

Anti-war protesters marched from Baltimore to Washington DC over a period of three days, stopping in Jessup and University Park, to protest the effects of the war on Iraq on the poor and working class.
New marchers joined as the group continuted down Route 1, singing peace and freedom songs and waving banners.
While the majority of marchers were from Maryland and DC, others came from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California, united in protest of war, occupation and military overspending in face of urgent social needs.
