In 1993, a few people imagined building an Oceanarium on a 30-acre power plant site along New Bedford Harbor.
That plan, which included a design by Peter Chermayeff of Chermayeff, Sollogub and Poole, securing designation of the power plant as an historic site on the National Register, and cleaning up a century of contamination, failed to receive financing through New Markets Tax Credits in 2003 and 2004.
Even while the Oceanarium's Board and staff had been engaged in design, construction and financing details for the building, the institution was growing on a parallel path.
