Buffalo township was first settled by Captain Benjamin W. Clark in December, 1833, and the first town, that of Buffalo, named in honor of Buffalo, N.Y. was laid out in 1826 at the time of the Incorporation of Davenport.
Buffalo's brick works are located northwest of the C R I and P depot, which lies on the extreme eastern end of the city.

The city of New Buffalo came into being because of a violent October storm in 1834, when Captain Wessel D. Whittaker grounded his schooner Post Boy in the mouth of a small stream called State Creek near the present village of Grand Beach.
The Michigan Central Railroad was chartered in 1846 to build a line to a point near the Indiana boundary and Lake Michigan.
New Buffalo was chosen as the end of the line.

NEW BUFFALO -- Officials pledged Tuesday night to investigate allegations that an administrator in the township's building department is using township facilities, fax equipment, computers and telephones to support her second job as a Realtor.
The documents and supporting statements from other township residents fueled a controversy that erupted in November when township officials were unable to explain why the door locks to the building department offices where Brinkman works had been changed.
Brinkman was in township offices and supposed to be working for New Buffalo Township at the time the correspondence was sent, McBride said.
