  History
Police protection in New Canaan through most of the 19th century consisted of a night watchman for the Borough (now the center of town) and one or two elected constables who were granted town-wide authority.
The Borough of New Canaan was officially incorporated by the State Legislature on May 9, 1889 and one of the powers granted to it was authority to provide police protection to New Canaan residents.
New Canaan's present police force was established on November 14, 1889, when the Borough Board of Warden and Burgesses hired John R. Tuckers as a night watchman.
