  CBC News Indepth: Conservative Party
Barely two years after members of the old Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservative parties voted overwhelmingly to merge and form the Conservative Party of Canada, the new party defied the sceptics and won a federal election.
But, the PC party under former leader Joe Clark concluded that Manning's dream of a united right appeared to be far closer to Reform's values than it was to the party of Sir John A. Macdonald.
Members of the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives overwhelmingly approved the merger in early December 2003 – and the Conservative Party of Canada was born.

Socialist Party of Canada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first Socialist Party of Canada existed from 1904 to 1925; the second has existed since June 1931 when it was relaunched by some members of the first party, but has not run a candidate at the federal level since 1961.
The founding of the Socialist Party of Canada began at the Socialist Party of British Columbia 4th annual convention on December 30 and 31, 1904.
The SPC remained outside of the CCF (and its successor, the New Democratic Party), rejecting its evolutionary socialist approach as being "reformist".

The New Democratic Party (NDP) (French: Nouveau Parti démocratique (NPD)) is a political party in Canada with social democratic and democratic socialist tendencies.
The Party has never governed Canada, but has wielded considerable influence during times of federal minority governments (which is the current government in Canada, under the Liberal Party of Canada), and has governed several provinces and a territory.
Unlike other federal parties, the NDP is integrated with its provincial and territorial party, such that a member of the federal party is a member of the provincial or territorial party where he or she resides.

The influence of organized labour on the party is still reflected in the party's leadership elections as labour votes are scaled to 25% of the total number of ballots cast.
Since then, the federal NDP is not integrated with a provincial party in that province; instead, it has a section, the Nouveau Parti démocratique-Section Québec, whose activities in the province are limited to the federal level, whereas on the provincial level its members are individually free to support or adhere to any party.
However the party does not allow her to be part of the parliamentary caucus, as the NDP favours the abolition of the Senate.

This initiative, which amounts to an admission that Reform as presently constituted has little likelihood of coming to power, is born of Reformers' frustration at the Liberals' appropriation of much of their right-wing economic agenda, on the one hand, and the strong popular opposition to Reform's social conservatism and Anglo-chauvinism, on the other.

Be they Liberal or liberal, New Democrats or democrats, Green voters or voters who want a green country, or even Red Tories searching for a home, these bloggers believe that Canadian politics should move in a progressive direction.
As for Orchard, why would he join the new Canada Party when he can kick a little PC ass, use the law to maintain control of the official PC party after the bogus merger, and then become ultimate maestro of his own party, purged of the right-wing wackos.
I was kind of joking about Orchard and the "Canada Party" but the things that would be proposed are right up his alley, including telling the banks to fund projects in Canada.
