 Delhi Metro extends underground network
New Delhi: Delhi Metro Rail Corp, which is building a mass-transit system in India's capital, extended its underground network at the weekend, linking some of the city's residential suburbs with its commercial and political hub.
The first phase of the project, which Delhi Metro expects will cost 105.71 billion rupees (RM9.2bil), is now two-thirds complete, with a mix of overland and underground routes covering the north, northeastern and central areas of the city in a 34km network.
Delhi Metro, co-owned by the federal and Delhi state governments, is building its network with loans from the governments of India and Japan and is also advising at least six cities in India on their plans for similar systems.

The Delhi Metro, being a joint venture of the Union Government and the Delhi Government, wants to stay clear of any political controversies and its Managing Director, E. Sreedharan, is firm that nothing should come in the way of its progress.
Though the putting up of political advertisements is not "illegal" as several spots on the Delhi Metro system have been set aside for advertising, which is a major source of revenue for the Corporation, sources said commercial interests will not be allowed to rule over ethics.

Similar to the eventual through electricfication of the Transsiberian Railway (a long-standing thread in the old Trainnet Forum) on 23 Dec., the opening of the New Delhi Subway has been a bit forgotten by newsprint media on 26/27 December.
Quite a few trains were reported to have been overcrowded, and due to door stalling one of the 4 trainsets had to be taken out of service during the day (resembling other opening mishaps all over the globe).
I haven't seen the matter in the "Industry News" column on the TN Homepage, so I apologize for attaching the German "FAZ" note from Dec. 27, 2002 here.
