EDINBURGH, a city and royal burgh, and county of itself, the capital of Scotland, and county town of Edinburghshire or Midlothian, situated to the south of the Firth of Forth, 396 m.
In Warriston cemetery (opened in 1843) in the New Town, were buried Sir James Young Simpson, Alexander Smith the poet, Horatio McCulloch, R.S.A., the landscape painter, the Rev. James Millar, the last Presbyterian chaplain of the castle, and the Rev. James Peddie, the pastor of Bristo Street church.
During the establishment of Episcopacy in Scotland, Edinburgh was the seat of a bishop, and the ancient collegiate church of St Giles rose to the dignity of a cathedral.

New College, Edinburgh was founded in 1846 as a college of the Free Church of Scotland, later of the United Free Church of Scotland, and currently the School of Divinity of the University of Edinburgh and a Divinity college of the Church of Scotland.
Prior to the 1929 reunion of the Church of Scotland, candidates for the ministry in the United Free Church studied at New College, whilst candidates for the old Church of Scotland studied in the Divinity Faculty of the University of Edinburgh.
Technically, New College remains a Church of Scotland institution; the Principal is appointed by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

EDINBURGH was the focus for a new chapter in broadcasting history yesterday as the first local, commercial, all-speech radio station to launch in 33 years went on the air.
Talk 107, a 24-hour news and talk station, began broadcasting to a potential audience of one million listeners in Edinburgh and the east coast at 6am.
Mr Zycinski said yesterday was "probably not the best news day in the world to launch", but added that the concentration on Edinburgh and east coast news, rather than national items, was a "smart move" to differentiate it from other offerings.
