New Hall is a women-only college in the University of Cambridge.
It was founded in 1954, at a time when Cambridge had the lowest proportion of women undergraduates of any university in the UK and when only two other colleges (Girton and Newnham) could admit women students.
However, New Hall's undergraduates often choose to stay on with the college during graduate studies, as they come to appreciate its laid-back atmosphere and friendly community.

The first focus was a new public library, and members of a committee appointed by Mayor William E. Russell sought "wealthy, generous and public-spirited citizens" to contribute to this project.
Later in the year, he offered to build the city three additional civic buildings: a new city hall, a manual training school, and a high school (which was not realized with Rindge funds).
Frederick Hastings Rindge was born in Cambridge in 1857, the son of Samuel Baker and Clarissa Harrington Rindge.

New Hall's early progress was good, taking the headship of the Lent Bumps in 1976, 1978 and 1980.
In the May Bumps, initial performance was good, taking the headship in 1977, 1981 and 1984 in the four-oared races, but in 1990, when the start order was re-organised, the New Hall 1st VIII were placed at the bottom of the 1st division and dropped into the 2nd division in 1992.
By 1996, New Hall had climbed as high as 10th, but found itself in the 2nd division again by the end of 1998.

He was born in Bedfordshire and entered King's Hall, Cambridge, as a Bible clerk, receiving the degrees of B.A. early in 1535, M.A. in 1541, and B.S. in 1547.
He held the living of Grendon, Northamptonshire, which was in the gift of King's Hall, from 21 September, 1538, to November, 1541, and successively, fellowships of King's Hall, St. Catharine's Hall, and of Trinity College.
In 1558 he was elected Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge but being a Catholic he refused to conform to the Elizabethan heresies, and hence in 1560 was forced to resign all his preferments and went in 1564 to live in retirement in Caius College, Cambridge.
