The Town of Hartford was within the bounds of the old Charlotte County, which was renamed Washington County after the American Revolution.
The Provincial Patent (26,000 acres), later the Town of Hartford, was granted to 26 commissioned officers of the New York Infantry, veterans of the French and Indian War, May 2, 1764.
The Provincial Patent was included in the Town of Westfield, and comprised the present towns of Putnam, Fort Ann, and Dresden and a portion of Kingsbury, besides Hartford.

   The Hartford recently filed suit seeking at least $5 million against seven New York State residents and eleven New York businesses for their role in a complex scheme to fraudulently purchase insurance coverage and evade paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in automobile liability insurance premiums.
The Hartford’s suit alleges the named defendants conspired to fraudulently obtain automobile liability insurance for five New York City taxi and livery companies by misrepresenting them as lower risk ambulette and limousine companies operating primarily in rural Duchess county.
“Despite this scam, The Hartford is committed to settling fairly the claims of those innocent victims who were in accidents involving taxis that were insured under false pretenses,” said Joseph Koenig, manager of The Hartford’s major case team which investigates organized fraud.
