		New Idria was a previously mining-oriented, now ghost town in coastal range of California, outside of Hollister, California up in the Diablo Range mountains.
		The community was established in the 19th century and the town was named New Idria in honour of Idrija, Slovenia, which also used to be a mercury-mining town.
		The discovery of mercury ore at New Idira coincided with the California gold rush in 1848-1858.

	New Idria Mining Area
		New Idria is a ghost town and former mining site in the Diablo Range of central California, notable especially for its remoteness and isolation, as much as for its unique history and the picturesque nature of its mostly abandoned buildings.
		The town supported a cinnabar mine - a mineral that is used to produce mercury (quicksilver) - that operated from around 1850 to 1971.
		The townsite is privately owned, and there are plans to develop it into a historic park, open to the public, called the New Idria Quicksilver Park.

		The discovery of a rich cinnabar deposit near Santa Clara, California in1848 led to the opening of the New Almaden Quicksilver Mine, named after the world's largest quicksilver producer in Almaden, Spain.
		Soon after, a small team prospecting in the rugged mountains of the southern Diablo range about 80 miles south of Santa Clara discovered another rich cinnabar deposit and they quickly formed the New Idria Quicksilver Mining Company, which is named after the world's second largest quicksilver producer in Idrija, Slovenia.
