		The New International Version (NIV) was a produced by a committee of scholars associated with various evangelical churches in America, who began work on the version in 1965.
		Members of the NIV committee were conscious of the reasons for conservative rejection of the Revised Standard Version, and so they deliberately avoided the "liberal" aspects of that version.

	A Review of the New International Version
		Many versions of Holy Scripture claim to be literal translations (e.g., the AV, the Revised Standard Version, the New American Standard Bible); others claim excellent readability (the paraphrases such as the Living Bible and Phillips New Testament), but the NIV claims both literalness and readability.
		Although the NIV translators were free to consider and incorporate readings from other Greek texts (thus rendering the basis of the NIV New Testament an 'eclectic' text), it appears that they followed the United Bible Society's Third Edition for their New Testament work.
		The reader of the NIV is given verses in which Joseph and Mary are freely put together as Jesus' parents; Joseph's association with Mary as "His father and mother" tends to leave the reader with the impression that this special parentage was equally shared by this human couple.

		On Jan 28, 2002 the International Bible Society announced the publication of this third gender-neutral revision of the New International Version, and distributed advance review copies of the New Testament at the Christian Booksellers Association annual convention.
		The version features the usual gender-neutral alterations: "brothers and sisters" is put instead of "brothers" (but the reader is not informed of the change in a footnote, as in the NRSV); the generic masculine use of "man," "he," "his," etc., is eliminated, usually by recasting the sentences with plural forms.
		In 1973 (the same year that the NIV New Testament was first published) feminists and other special-interest groups began putting heavy pressure on educational publishers to eliminate 'sexist' ideas and portrayals of people, and to use only gender-neutral language in their textbooks.

		Although it is the truest translation available I find reading it in conjunction with a NIV clears all the language difficulties people have (you also get a good lesson in olde English).
		As this version is not a study Bible, the engaged reader may wonder seriously what the context should be.
