BOI - Israel Notes and Coins
On September 4, 1985 the new sheqel, equal to 1,000 old sheqalim, became the currency of Israel.
The name "sheqel" was retained so as not to deviate from the original intention of the legislator as embodied in the Sheqel Currency Law, 5729-1969, viz., to preserve the ancient name of Israel's coinage.
The new sheqel series continues the trend of perpetuating the memory of prominent personages in Jewish history.

RATE-EXCHANGE.org - Israel Currency / Israeli New Sheqel
The New Israeli shekel is the third generation of national currency, and was introduced in 1985 by the State of Israel’s official monetary policy organization – the Bank of Israel – to replace its predecessor, the “old” shekel.
The original shekel was introduced in 1980 at a conversion rate of one shekel for each 10 lira.
The plural of shekel is “shekelim” (or sheqalim) in Hebrew, though Israelis frequently used the Anglicized plural “shekels” instead.

Post 1967 distortions such as the Israeli imposed "customs union", restrictions on Palestinian imports and exports, and the Arab boycott have been further compounded by the disengagement of the Gulf States after 1991 and the reduction in the transfer of remittances from Palestinian expatriates working there, and the devaluation of the Jordanian Dinar.
The downturn was largely the result of Israeli closure policies - the imposition of generalized border closures in response to security incidents in Israel - which disrupted previously established labor and commodity market relationships between Israel and the WBGS (West Bank and Gaza Strip).
Recovery was upended in the last quarter of 2000 with the outbreak of Palestinian violence, which triggered tight Israeli closures of Palestinian self-rule areas and a severe disruption of trade and labor movements.

Israeli law barred the return of the refugees because it would create a disproportionately high Palestinian demographic in the country, which Israel feels would undermine the purpose and security of the Israeli state.
In response to Israeli military action, support for these terrorist groups has grown as Palestinians begin to see armed resistance as their only line of defense (5).
Traditionally, the Palestinian government has backed suicide attacks on Israeli civilians and been the unjust aggressor, but in the current situation it must be admitted that Israel is largely to blame for a failure to resume diplomatic negotiations.

(Before 1980 the Israeli currency was called the Israeli pound or lira.) The NIS is equivalent to 1,000 old Israeli shekels and is divided into 100 agorot.
The requirement for the NIS stemmed from the very rapid inflation rate of the preceding years, which also resulted in dramatic devaluation of the old shekel against foreign currencies; for example, from 1980 to 1985 the old shekel lost value against the United States dollar by 25,000 percent.
In 1988 it remained Israeli- occupied territory and was not recognized by the United States government as part of Israel.

Of major importance to the Israeli economy is the large number of immigrants who have been absorbed into the economy since 1989.
Although the process of absorbing new immigrants has encountered some difficulties over the past five years, this body of immigrants provides a wealth of professional and technological resources that has the potential for spurring economic growth, both in terms of know-how and in terms of supply and demand.

Currently, the shekel is the legal currency of the Palestinian Authority and Palestinians have never had their own currency (the Oslo Agreement has prevented the Palestinian Monetary Authority from issuing a national currency).
