New York was the preeminent U.S. state in commerce and manufacturing from the early 19th century until the late 1960s, when it began to be surpassed by California; in the 1990s it continued to be a leading component of the U.S. economy and remained first in many branches of economic activity.

Around 2000, the state gave the part of Route 29 between 165 and 179 (formerly US 202) to the city, and 29 was rerouted to use all of 165 and one block of 179.

New Jersey also has a system of secondary highways.
The 500-series highways are designated by the state but county-maintained and have county highway shields.
The state has encouraged each county to use numbers in the 600-699 range for its county highways with overflow to 700-799 and 800-899, but the system was voluntary, and two counties (Bergen and Monmouth) did not switch, and those counties use 1- and 2-digit county routes.
