CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: State of New York
It is bounded by Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and the Dominion of Canada on the north; by Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut on the east; by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the Atlantic Ocean on the south, and by Pennsylvania, Lake Erie, and the Niagara River on the west.
The ice-free and deep-channelled port of New York, lying at the mouth of the Hudson River, with its wide roadsteads and anchorages and vast transportation facilities is indeed the greatest property of the State of New York.
The population of the State of New York itself increased from 340,120 in 1790 to 1,918,608 in 1830.

New Jersey Route 165 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Route 165 is a 0.26-mile (0.42 km) unmarked state highway in Lambertville, New Jersey, United States.
(Current 29 north of Lambertville was Route 29A.) The northernmost section of current 165, north of Swan Creek and County Route 518, was taken over by the state in 1929, and the rest was taken over in 1941.
Around 2000, the state gave the part of Route 29 between 165 and 179 (formerly US 202) to the city, and 29 was rerouted to use all of 165 and one block of 179.

 Garden State Parkway
On April 14, 1952, the State Legislature enacted legislation to create the New Jersey Highway Authority, which was to construct, operate and maintain a self-sufficient toll parkway from Paramus to Cape May. Orrie de Nooyer was appointed as the first executive director of the New Jersey Highway Authority.
Although it received strong support from state leaders, the plan to eliminate tolls eventually was criticized by bondholders, who considered the move as politically motivated and financially irresponsible, as well as by members of the toll collectors' union, who feared losing their jobs.
The entire length of the extension between NJ 17 in Paramus and the New York State Thruway was $21.3 million, $17.0 million of which was borne by the New Jersey Highway Authority and the remainder by the New York State Thruway Authority.

Chapter Two: The History of Highway Aesthetics
The Interstate Highway Act of 1956, similarly, did not set aside any funds specifically for roadside beautification; as massive and as economically vital as this project was, highway engineers of the postwar era generally failed to understand the impact their new creations would have on anything other than traffic.
It included categories such as “outstanding highway in its rural setting and environment,” “outstanding highway in its urban setting and environment,” and “outstanding example of landscape treatment along roadsides and interchanges.” This competition recognized and rewarded highway designs which showed sensitivity to their surroundings or were aesthetically pleasing (FHWA 1984).
This may be the result of two things: first, the traditional engineering focus of state departments of transportation which sees little value in the aesthetic improvement of structures whose purpose is to move cars, and second, the fact that enhancement projects are oftentimes so small compared to traditional highway programs as to seem fiscally irrelevant.

 Interstate 895 (NJ-PA, unbuilt)
The new I-895 was to not only provide a new crossing of the Delaware River, but also serve as part of a northern bypass of the Philadelphia-Camden metropolitan area.
Considered a replacement for the existing river crossing between Burlington, New Jersey and Bristol, Pennsylvania, this high-level structure would, in combination with I-295, the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-276) and the Mid-County Expressway (I-476), complete an outer circumferential route for the heavily urbanized portion of the region.
Since the entire route was a Federally-funded Interstate highway project - the Federal government was to contribute 90 percent of the construction cost, while the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania were to contribute the remaining 10 percent - no tolls were to be charged on the route.

Highway Traffic Noise in the United States, Problem and Response - FHWA
Effective control of the undesirable effects of highway traffic noise requires that land use near highways be controlled, that vehicles themselves be quieted, and that mitigation of noise be undertaken on individual highway projects.
Highway construction noise should generally be addressed in a qualitative, rather than quantitative, manner commensurate with the scope of the highway project.
