CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: State of New York
It is bounded by Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and the Dominion of Canada on the north; by Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut on the east; by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the Atlantic Ocean on the south, and by Pennsylvania, Lake Erie, and the Niagara River on the west.
The ice-free and deep-channelled port of New York, lying at the mouth of the Hudson River, with its wide roadsteads and anchorages and vast transportation facilities is indeed the greatest property of the State of New York.
The population of the State of New York itself increased from 340,120 in 1790 to 1,918,608 in 1830.

NEW YORK, one of the Middle Atlantic states of the U.S., bordered on the N by the Canadian provinces of Ontario and QuÉbec; on the E by Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut; on the SE by the Atlantic Ocean; on the S by New Jersey and Pennsylvania; and on the W by Pennsylvania and Ontario.
New York was the preeminent U.S. state in commerce and manufacturing from the early 19th century until the late 1960s, when it began to be surpassed by California; in the 1990s it continued to be a leading component of the U.S. economy and remained first in many branches of economic activity.
New York’s determination to increase its use of the harbor area and the Hudson River shipping lanes led to friction with New Jersey, and its claim to Vermont caused a conflict with the residents of that area until Vermont became a state in 1790.

A statewide system of major county highways is numbered by the NJDOT in the 500-599 range; these are known as 500 Series County Routes.
The new numbers followed a general geographical pattern from north to south - 1-12 in northern New Jersey, 21-28 roughly radiating from Newark, 29-37 from Trenton, 38-47 from Camden, and 48-50 in southern New Jersey.
The majority of new numbers assigned since the 1953 renumbering have been from 166 to 185, with some short routes instead receiving numbers based on their parents (for instance, an old section of U.S. Route 9 became Route 109).

Route 165 is a 0.26-mile (0.42 km) unmarked state highway in Lambertville, New Jersey, United States.
In the 1953 renumbering, Route 29 was redefined to continue north from Lambertville on former 29A, and old 29 northeast of Lambertville became part of U.S. Route 202 (which turned west on Route S29 in Lambertville).
Around 2000, the state gave the part of Route 29 between 165 and 179 (formerly US 202) to the city, and 29 was rerouted to use all of 165 and one block of 179.

Why Highway Demonstration Projects Should Not Penalize States
Meanwhile, "donor" states, which already receive less than their fair share of the federal fuel taxes their citizens pay into the highway trust fund, are hit particularly hard.
Some examples of the demonstration projects included in the last highway bill are a parking facility in Newark, New Jersey; the construction of a bike path in Tennessee; turning lanes and sign upgrades in Babylon, New York; and improved access to an industrial park in Pennsylvania.
In addition to misdirecting existing federal funds, earmarked demonstration projects require states to put up their own funds to match the federal grant, further limiting the ability of each state to use its own funds to meet local priorities.
