New Jersey State Highway 4 is a state highway in New Jersey, United States.
Parts of NJ 35 and United States Highway 9 south of Woodbridge bore the NJ 4 designation prior to 1953.
The Garden State Parkway was originally designed to bypass this stretch of NJ 4, and a stretch built prior to 1953 between Union and Woodbridge appeared on maps as "4 PKY".

 Garden State Parkway
On April 14, 1952, the State Legislature enacted legislation to create the New Jersey Highway Authority, which was to construct, operate and maintain a self-sufficient toll parkway from Paramus to Cape May. Orrie de Nooyer was appointed as the first executive director of the New Jersey Highway Authority.
The speed limit on the Garden State Parkway is 65 MPH from milepost 27 north to milepost 123, and from milepost 163 north to the New Jersey-New York border.
The entire length of the extension between NJ 17 in Paramus and the New York State Thruway was $21.3 million, $17.0 million of which was borne by the New Jersey Highway Authority and the remainder by the New York State Thruway Authority.

May 2002 - The State of New Jersey reaffirmed its commitment to purchase green power by entering into a contract with Green Mountain Energy Company to purchase a total of 113 million kWh of renewables-based electricity over a 15-month period.
Nearly 200 state facilities will receive power from Green Mountain Energy's Enviro Blend product, which is Green-e certified and supplied from renewable resources such as wind, water, biomass and solar generation.
Under an earlier contract, the state was purchasing a blend of landfill gas and small hydro resources from Conectiv Energy (see previous story).

Many thought this was a political move, since Brendan Byrne was a Democrat and the governor at the time of the deal was Christine Todd Whitman, a Republican.
