  Structure Fire Closes State Highway 36 in Highlands - Atlantic Highlands Herald - New Jersey
HIGHLANDS, NJ — A structure fire at 77 Navesink Avenue (Highway 36) in Highlands on Monday gutted the second floor of the building and closed the highway in both directions for a couple hours between the bridge and Linden Avenue.
The house is on the south side of the highway between OLPH Church and Off the Hook Restaurant.
Traffic was diverted from Linden at Rte 36, along Bay Avenue to the bridge for two hours while firefighters battled the blaze.

 Garden State Parkway
On April 14, 1952, the State Legislature enacted legislation to create the New Jersey Highway Authority, which was to construct, operate and maintain a self-sufficient toll parkway from Paramus to Cape May. Orrie de Nooyer was appointed as the first executive director of the New Jersey Highway Authority.
The speed limit on the Garden State Parkway is 65 MPH from milepost 27 north to milepost 123, and from milepost 163 north to the New Jersey-New York border.
The entire length of the extension between NJ 17 in Paramus and the New York State Thruway was $21.3 million, $17.0 million of which was borne by the New Jersey Highway Authority and the remainder by the New York State Thruway Authority.

The state plans, which called for a north-south, NJ 18 Freeway from Bound Brook to Eatontown, and a north-south, NJ 35 Freeway from Long Branch to Seaside Heights, were endorsed by the Tri-State Transportation Commission in its 1962 regional expressway plan.
Construction of the new Raritan River span began in the late 1960's, and by 1970, three massive piers that were to be used to support the bridge were in place.
