i-76   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The western I-76 commemorates Colorado, which became a U.S. state in 1876; the eastern I-76 commemorates the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence, which occurred in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1776.
A movement exists in New Jersey to extend the I-76 designation eastward past the interstate's current terminus down the North-South Freeway (See New Jersey State Highway 42) and the Atlantic City Expressway to Atlantic City, New Jersey.
While the South Jersey Transportation Authority (the Authority runs the Atlantic City Expressway) is not against the idea, they feel that making the change without a compelling reason would only add to motorists' confusion in southern New Jersey.

Orrie de Nooyer was appointed as the first executive director of the New Jersey Highway Authority.
Although it received strong support from state leaders, the plan to eliminate tolls eventually was criticized by bondholders, who considered the move as politically motivated and financially irresponsible, as well as by members of the toll collectors' union, who feared losing their jobs.
The entire length of the extension between NJ 17 in Paramus and the New York State Thruway was $21.3 million, $17.0 million of which was borne by the New Jersey Highway Authority and the remainder by the New York State Thruway Authority.
