States should also not be afraid to take off the rose-colored glasses and examine both their strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
States need to find a way out of this, but if they are unable to do so, strong action by the federal government to limit bidding wars by taxing firm-specific incentives (and returning the revenues, along with current federal economic and community development assistance, to states that swear off incentives) may be needed.
States need to adopt policies to ensure that American companies have the skilled workers they need to be productive, while simultaneously ensuring that American workers have the skills they need to navigate, adapt, and prosper in the New Economy.

 Caltrans :: Interstate Turns 50
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), which represents the state departments of transportation in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, wants to “Celebrate the Interstate!” both nationally and in individual states.
California is itself commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Interstate Highway System on June 16, 2006, at San Francisco’s Lincoln Park, which was the western terminus of one of America’s best-known historic roads, the Lincoln Highway.
Planning for a system of new highways actually began in the late 1930s, and in 1944 the National Highway Committee, appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, developed plans for a national system of expressways, approved by Congress as the 40,000 mile National System of Interstate Highways.

State legislatures report that the costs associated with installing and maintaining a computer system and associated software could be as high as an initial cost of over $5 million per state plus maintenance costs in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in the out years.
Neither state fiscal officers, legislators nor governors or their associations were consulted in determining the financial and political ramifications of the changes proposed within the proposed rule, as required in Title II of UMRA.
Considering that none of the states included in the estimates has experienced large population increases, it is unlikely that the high range accurately reflects the true "high range" costs associated with states where population and migration are on the rise.

 Garden State Parkway
On April 14, 1952, the State Legislature enacted legislation to create the New Jersey Highway Authority, which was to construct, operate and maintain a self-sufficient toll parkway from Paramus to Cape May. Orrie de Nooyer was appointed as the first executive director of the New Jersey Highway Authority.
Although it received strong support from state leaders, the plan to eliminate tolls eventually was criticized by bondholders, who considered the move as politically motivated and financially irresponsible, as well as by members of the toll collectors' union, who feared losing their jobs.
The entire length of the extension between NJ 17 in Paramus and the New York State Thruway was $21.3 million, $17.0 million of which was borne by the New Jersey Highway Authority and the remainder by the New York State Thruway Authority.

 Caltrans :: Interstate Highway 50
The Lake Tahoe Wagon Road, California’s first state highway, which officially became Highway 50 in 1927, is also known as the “backbone of America” and is commemorated as such by the Highway 50 Association.

Bear in mind that New Jersey's Supreme Court found that it was "unconstitutional" to require abortionists to notify a parent before sucking a baby out of your teenage girl's uterus.
This new "seatbelt" law now requires drivers to make sure their seventeen year old daughter is wearing a seatbelt, but that same parent has no "right" to know if an abortionist is going to operate on his daughter.
The Abbott decision is outrageous, and New Jersey had to adopt an income tax because of its Supreme Court's rulings on education back in the seventies.

The NJ 52 bridge was built to serve as US 9's spur to Ocean City, so it begins at that route instead of extending to the Garden State Parkway interchange with Laurel Drive.
Below the State of New Jersey plaque is this date of 1932, even though the plaque says 1933.
One would stay on 52 to head toward the Parkway NB anyway; it's a detour to the Parkway South that would take one to the right instead of down 559.
