Route 87 is a state highway in the U.S. state of New Jersey.
However, the portion from Brigantine to the Atlantic-Ocean county line was never built, and the segment in Ocean County was given back to the county, resulting in the shorter alignment now known as Route 87.

 Garden State Parkway
On April 14, 1952, the State Legislature enacted legislation to create the New Jersey Highway Authority, which was to construct, operate and maintain a self-sufficient toll parkway from Paramus to Cape May. Orrie de Nooyer was appointed as the first executive director of the New Jersey Highway Authority.
The speed limit on the Garden State Parkway is 65 MPH from milepost 27 north to milepost 123, and from milepost 163 north to the New Jersey-New York border.
The entire length of the extension between NJ 17 in Paramus and the New York State Thruway was $21.3 million, $17.0 million of which was borne by the New Jersey Highway Authority and the remainder by the New York State Thruway Authority.

Route 4 is a state highway in Bergen County and Passaic County, New Jersey, United States, that is also known as the Mackay Highway.
The Garden State Parkway was originally designed to bypass this stretch of NJ 4, and a stretch built prior to 1953 between Union and Woodbridge Township appeared on maps as "4 PKY".
To this day, the New Jersey Department of Transportation's internal reference number for the Parkway is NJ 444, commemorating the proposal.

 New York State Thruway (I-87 and I-287)
The "Hudson" (later New York State) Thruway was to parallel the Saw Mill River Parkway in the western corridor, while the "New England" Thruway was to parallel the Hutchinson River Parkway in the eastern corridor.
On October 9, 1997, a section of the New York State Thruway was closed at EXIT 5 (NY 100) when a gasoline truck exploded underneath a thruway overpass, killing a motorist and destroying the overpass.
The speed limit on the New York State Thruway should be raised to 60 MPH from EXIT 5 (NY 100) in Yonkers north to EXIT 15A (NY 17 and NY 59) in Suffern.

A State Route that ended at a state border was renumbered to match the number assigned by the adjacent state.
