4 Hotel Reservations New Orleans - Accoomodation in New Orleans
New Orleans has been called a great many things in tribute to its distinctive culture: The Paris of the Americas, America's International City, the Gateway to the Americas, The City that Care Forgot, The Crescent City, and by natives, simply The Big Easy.
Strictly speaking, a New Orleans Creole is a descendant of an early French or Spanish settler, "born in the colony," not in Europe.
According to most dictionaries, Creole comes from the same Latin root as the word "create," with the French creating their "Creole" from the Spanish "criollo." Over time, this went from denoting a person born of Spanish parents overseas to a person born similarly of French parents.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Latin Literature in Early Christianity
The Latin language was not at first the literary and official organ of the Christian Church in the West.
Beginning with the second century, Latin translations of technical works written in Greek became numerous treatises on medicine, botany, mathematics, etc. These translations served a practical purpose, and were made by professionals; consequently they had no literary merit and aimed at an almost servile exactitude resulting in the retention of many peculiarities of the original.
Jerome made his new Latin version of the Scriptures, the partisans of the older versions to justify their opposition praised loudly the harsh fidelity of these inelegant translations (Augustine, "De doct.

Latin is a member of the Italic subfamily of the Indo-European languages; among non-Italic Indo-European languages, it is related especially closely to Sanskrit and Greek and to the Germanic and Celtic subfamilies.
Latin was influenced by Celtic dialects in northern Italy, by the non-Indo-European Etruscan language in central Italy, and by Greek, which was spoken in southern Italy as early as the 8th century bc.
The Latin literary language may be divided into four periods, corresponding in general to the periods of Latin literature.

New Latin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Latin studied in schools was almost always classical Latin, thanks to the continuing influence of the Humanists; its vocabulary and grammar were exclusively that of the Roman period, and little thought was given to writing about contemporary subjects in Latin.
Latin held this place of educational pre-eminence until the second half of the nineteenth century, when its value was increasingly questioned; in the twentieth century, educational philosophies such as that of John Dewey dismissed its relevance.
Latin is still spoken in international gatherings of Roman Catholic leaders, such as the Second Vatican Council or a papal conclave to elect a new Pope.

Latin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Latin is a member of the family of Italic languages, and its alphabet, the Latin alphabet, is based on the Old Italic alphabet, which is in turn derived from the Greek alphabet.
Latin was first brought to the Italian peninsula in the 9th or 8th century BC by migrants from the north, who settled in the Latium region, specifically around the River Tiber, where the Roman civilization first developed.
Latin translations of modern literature such as Paddington Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Tintin, Asterix, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Le Petit Prince, Max und Moritz, and The Cat in the Hat are intended to bolster interest in the language.

The Freeman's Burden:: The New Latin Socialism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
This trend is not truly new, but rather the latest in a historic tug-of-war between preferences among political leaders and the people of these nations for an alternative to the dogma dominating public policy at any given moment.
This trend, therefore, is the natural response to the failure of neo-liberalism to narrow income and social disparities within Latin America just as neo-liberalism represented the response to the failure of ISI (Import Substitution Industrialization) to achieve social and economic harmony among the previous generation.
Appeals to nationalism are as old as the nation-state and policies that give greater control to government to oversee economic activity and redistribute wealth have been a hallmark of socialism for as long as politicians have sought to curry favor, curb domestic dissent, or earnestly mitigate the suffering of their people.

Worldandnation: New Latin America movement: mass discontent
Latin America is in a state of "unmanageability," comparable only to a period of fiscal implosion in the 1930s as the United States went through the Great Depression, said Jorge Nef, a professor at the University of South Florida.
Today, in one form or another, the countries of the region are victims of an explosive mix of unpopular economic measures, centuries of social and ethnic exclusion and political corruption.
A new wave of political leaders, including Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and the recently elected presidents of Brazil and Argentina, Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva and Nestor Kirchner, have all expressed doubts about the benefits of opening their countries to international trade and investment.

Latin, the language of ancient Rome, is the ancestor of the modern Romance languages.
Latin was brought to the Italian peninsula by a wave of immigrants from the north about 1000 B.C. Over the centuries the city of Rome rose to a position of prominence and the Latin of Rome became the literary standard of the newly-emerging Roman Empire.
Latin lacks somewhat the variety and flexibility of Greek, perhaps reflecting the practical nature of the Roman people, who were more concerned with government and empire than with speculative thought and poetic imagery.

PUERTO RICO HERALD: New Latin Music Fuses Many Styles In A Polycultural Jam   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Correa and his various bands -- Suenalo, Locos Por Juana, and Xperimento -- are at the center of a new sound in Miami, one which was celebrated at Club State during the Miami Latin Funk Festival earlier this month.
In contrast to the Latin music that came out of this city in the '80s and most of the '90s, largely defined by artists like Gloria Estefan, Willie Chirino, and Nil Lara, who mixed Cuban with American genres, this new sound has its roots all over the Americas.
Whether these bands will have enough success to make an impact on the wider Latin music world, or change the perception of the Miami Latin sound as slick tropical dance pop remains to be seen.

This book's low average rating is, unfortunately, a reflection not of its quality, but of the error of a previous reviewer whose mistake was to expect the book to be a basic grammar rather than a reference grammar for more advanced students.
That said, students should note that this is a thorough descriptive reference grammar, not a grammar meant to teach Latin or to provide the intermediate student with a basic reference.
It seems a little presumptuous to comment on this classic, but it would be much easier to use if the section numbers were given at the top of the pages (like keywords in a dictionary).
