A new GCSE in further maths is to be brought in to stretch the ablest pupils, Ruth Kelly, the Education Secretary, announced yesterday.
From September this year pupils will be entered for one of two "tiers" of GCSE maths instead of the existing three with papers of varying difficulty designed to cater for the wide range of ability in the subject.
Maths qualifications for 16-year-olds will be further complicated by the introduction of a functional maths test covering basic, practical skills needed for the work place.

In subjects where the textbook was the main tool of learning such as maths and science, literature is now used in conjunction with the text book to help children see the everyday application of the topic at hand and hence through literature be able to apply the topic to their lives.
By using literature in the maths curriculum, the students are able to personalize the experiences in the story, make it their own, or store it until they do experience something similar and then be able to relate it to themselves.
Literature in maths can also be used to address multiculturalism issues, through stories outlining different cultures and how they use mathematics in their lives, this could be extended to a historic theme where non fiction and fiction stories could be used to illustrate maths applications through time and how it permeated individual lives and society.

To find the best line-up, mathematician Bruce Bukiet of the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark took data from the 1989 US baseball season and used it to calculate the likely number of runs each potential line-up would earn.

This year's HSC General Maths exam confirmed the fears of teachers and academics critical of the new syllabus, with many students complaining of the unexpected difficulty and length of the exam.
