 New Mexico Territory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The western portion of New Mexico came from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, while the remainder of eastern New Mexico (from the Rio Grande to the present New Mexico-Texas border) was added as consequence of the Compromise of 1850.
The land contained in the original 1850 New Mexico Territory was the western portion of the future state, plus most of future Arizona (known as Santa Ana County), a small part of Colorado, and Nevada south of 36° 30' N.
As the route to California, New Mexico and Arizona were disputed territory during the American Civil War, resulting in Gadsden settlers willingly joined to the Confederate States of America and the Battle of Glorieta Pass.

When these officials arrived in the new territory, the Territorial Governor issued a proclamation calling for an election of a territorial assembly, a body similar to a legislature in the states, and a representative to serve as a non voting member of the House of Representatives in Congress.
Territorial governments composed of officials appointed from Washington and representatives elected from the territory serving in the assembly created counties and authorized establishment of governments at that level.
The difference between government in the territories and in the states is that the territorial governors, secretaries and judges, that composed the court system and the Territorial Supreme Court, were appointed by the President, not elected by the citizens of the State.

The Battle of Valverde (February 20–21, 1862), fought in and around the town of Valverde in the New Mexico Territory, was a major Confederate success in the New Mexico Campaign of the American Civil War, despite having to leave later after the Battle of Glorieta Pass, which was a major Union victory.
General Henry Hopkins Sibley led his brigade of about 2,500 men across the Rio Grande and up the eastern side of the river to the ford near Valverde, somewhere north of Fort Craig, New Mexico, hoping to cut Union ("Federal") communications between the fort and their headquarters in Santa Fe.
Although the Confederates would soon occupy Santa Fe, they would have to leave New Mexico Territory within 3-4 months, retreating to El Paso, Texas, what was the starting point of the campaign.
