  The New Mutants
The New Mutants are a team of superhuman mutants, most of who were adolescents, who were being trained in the control and proper use of their superhuman abilities.
Recently, the concept of the New Mutants was revived as one of several teams of students at the expanded Xavier Institute for Higher Learning where they not only learn to master their powers, but are also given the chance to receive a full education.
The New Mutants quickly found themselves at odds with the Hellions and were assigned to work off their hostilities by competing against each other in the school's first Field Day training exercise.

The 8-issue Fallen Angels limited series (1987) was essentially a New Mutants spin-off series, as it starred New Mutants Sunspot and Warlock as the core of a short-lived motley group of misfits (the titular "Fallen Angels"), who were led by the criminal mutant Vanisher.
For the sake of completeness, it may be mentioned that Domino is sometimes listed as a member of the New Mutants, and she has been featured in two self-titled limited series (one in 1993 with 3 issues and one in 2003 with 4 issues).
The force field-powered mutant Skids (Sally Blevins, now retired from super-heroics) and fire-powered mutant Rusty Collins (not deceased) were members of the New Mutants for a relatively short time, and they are the only New Mutants who really have not been featured in recurring roles in an ongoing series since New Mutants #100.

The big new addition here is to establish that her father had the same powers and seduced her mother by the same means, which effectively makes her a child of rape.
The common thread here seems to be that Rahne and Laurie were both withdrawn and shy at some point, but this rather gets obscured when the story has to try and jabber away about Rahne's time as a Genoshan mutate, her time in X-Factor and so forth.

Warlock (New Mutants) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Warlock is a member of the alien Technarchy, a race of mechanical organisms that survive by infecting living creatures with the "techno-organic" transmode virus, before draining the life energy ("lifeglow") of the infected organism.
Warlock served as a member of the original New Mutants for much of that group's existence, and became the best friend of his teammate Doug Ramsey, alias Cypher, until Doug's death at the hands of the Ani-Mator.
Warlock had a distinctive way of talking during his stint in the New Mutants comics, frequently referring to himself with the personal pronoun "self", and to his teammates as "selffriends".

The New Mutants, who constituted a new class at Professor X's school, brought the concept back to its roots.
The new class began with the professor, despondent at the presumed deaths of the original X-Men at the hands of aliens, uninterested in resuming his educational work.
Afterward, a mutant from the future named Cable, likely the son and/or stepson of Cyclops and Phoenix, organized many of them into X-Force, another mutant team, this one less interested in peaceful coexistence with normal humans than in seeing that the mutants come out on top.

I mean, I consider myself a big fan of the original New Mutants, and as such I'm fairly intrigued by this book's use of Dani Moonstar and Xi'an Coy, as well as the teaser appearance by Magma, and this issue cover which would seem to suggest we can expect an appearance by Rahne.
I mean we have the eternally cheerful Sofia, the scared of her own shadow Laurie, the seemingly intelligent, but quick tempered David, and the newest addition, "I made a very bad first impression on this group" Josh.

 NEWSARAMA.COM: KYLE & YOST ON NEW X-MEN
As Yost sees it, House of M and Decimation were essential to the two’s view of their charges in New X-Men, because, he said, it takes the Marvel Universe back to a point where mutants are the (very) persecuted minority, and there is a fair chance that a well-intentioned person could wipe them all out.
While adding that Stryker won’t be the only major villain to bother the X-kids, Kyle used him as an example of what he and Yost are looking to do with the series, which is firmly integrate it into the larger X-verse.
Again reiterating how they’re looking to bring the mutant kids more squarely into the Marvel Universe, Yost explained that it’s been their goal all along to have the New X-Men seen in the same light as the New Mutants were back in their heyday.
