New Norfolk County is a long-extinct county which was located in colonial Virginia from 1636 until 1637.
New Norfolk County included all the area in South Hampton Roads now incorporated in the five independent cities located there in modern times.
In 1963, after approval by referendum of the voters of the City of South Norfolk and the rest of Norfolk County and the Virginia General Assembly, they were combined and reorganized as a new city, ending the threat of additional annexations.

McCarty's appointment to the district was as a result of an influx of Norfolk Islanders (which is how the town came to be named New Norfolk) in 1807-1808.
In 1812 he was granted 50 acres at Boyer just east of New Norfolk and shortly afterwards he successfully petitioned for a road between Hobart Town and the New Norfolk district.
By the 1860s the area around New Norfolk had become the centre of hop growing in Tasmania and oast houses had sprung up at strategic places in the valley.
