New Democratic Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New Democratic Party (French: Nouveau Parti démocratique) is a left wing political party in Canada that advocates varying forms of social democracy and democratic socialism.
In Quebec, the Quebec New Democratic Party and the federal NDP agreed in 1989 to sever their structural ties after the Quebec party adopted a sovereignist platform.
Since then, the federal NDP is not integrated with a provincial party in that province; instead, it has a section, the Nouveau Parti démocratique-Section Québec, whose activities in the province are limited to the federal level, whereas on the provincial level its members are individually free to support or adhere to any party.

Socialism Today - ‘New Politics’ in Canada
LAST NOVEMBER leaders of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) received a shock when 37% of delegates at the party’s national convention voted in favour of the New Politics Initiative (NPI), a current of NDP lefts and social activists outside the party who are proposing to replace the NDP with a new left-wing formation.
While the NPI initially described itself as socialist and insisted that the new party would be formed regardless of what happened at Winnipeg, the months leading up to the convention saw a process of moderation and accommodation to the party establishment.
We agree that a new party of the left is needed and that the NDP is not capable of filling that role.

New Politics Initiative - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New Politics Initiative (or NPI) was a faction of Canada's New Democratic Party.
It was generally viewed to be further left then Alexa McDonough's leadership, but not as far left as the Socialist Caucus or Fightback (then known as L'Humanite).
At the NDP convention held in Winnipeg in November 2001, opponents of the initiative used this lack of detail to defeat the proposal.

The expression of "new politics" energized the convention and came from several sources.
The process of presentation and discussion at this forum was an expression of "new politics" as the moderator, Judy Rebick, alternated between speakers from floor mikes and the quieter voices speaking from their seats.
The challenge will be to practice "new politics" at the community level and breathe life into federal riding associations which are otherwise dormant between elections.

NEW POLITICS INITIATIVE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
In the often static world of the Canadian left, the New Politics Initiative, to be launched at a press conference in Ottawa today by social movement activist Judy Rebick and NDP MP Svend Robinson, is an important development.
The fundamental goal of the NPI is to bring a new generation of social movement activists into a radically redefined version of party politics, a highly laudable goal.
The NPI is strongest in its advocacy of a style of politics which is participatory at all levels, to replace the top-down decision making that is as much a part of the NDP as it is of other parties.

The political decisions of the state become so important a part of the business transactions of the corporations that it is a law of their survival that most decisions should suit the needs of profit-making.
The new breed of politicians see elections as a means of putting the community in charge of the instruments of state, not as a route to power for themselves and their party.
The new breed is exemplified by the Brazilian Workers Party (PT), based in the struggle against fascist dictatorship of the 1980s and with strong links to civil society and the landless movement MST.

Robinson defined 'new politics' as bridging the gap between grassroots activists - 'the movement' - and electoral parties.
Singh replied that the buzzword 'new politics' is a public relations tactic to co-opt competing activist tendencies under a diplomatic umbrella.
He said this is true whether 'new politics' means a new political party or, on the contrary, a clear rejection of electoral politics for strategic reasons.

New technical possibilities allow the media to collect the views of the public in a much more direct way than before.
For the sake of fairness and transparency, the media might, for example, provide information on the composition of the sample which would allow the audience to judge to what extent it is representative.(2) Furthermore, it might be interesting to know if the media present the results of such votes to decision-makers, requesting a reaction.
The initial aim is to foster communities which connect people who are interested in the same issues.

Comment on the New Politics Initiative
Everywhere in the vision statement this definition is contrasted with "new policies", which is asserted to be the standard means of decision-making, and is characterised as top-down, hierarchical, old and outdated, in opposition to the left-wing purpose, and not able to obtain the kind of decisions that we want to be able to make.
When political scientists turned their attention towards corporations, they found that the structure of power strongly resembled a feudal aristocracy-- large numbers on the bottom had no power and no means to remedy grievances, and small numbers at the top had all the power and no accountability for it.
Leaders should arise from self-selected initiative, and have their leadership affirmed on the basis of their wisdom, erudition, charisma, and vision, not on the basis of their occupancy of an office or their possession of a title from which the person herself is theoretically separated.

NPI: Can we build a new left?
And while the party brass, like Alexa McDonough, are stiffly welcoming the new initiative as part of the NDP ‘renewal’ process, there is no doubt that the New Politics Initiative has shaken the Party’s old guard.
McDonough was more explicit when she said that while many young people have been drawn into the new movement against global trade deals, many more youth are altogether disenfranchised from the political process and that the party should be cautious about appealing to the young radicals at the expense of the rest.
The key to forging a new left in this country will not be determined by the November convention, not by a series of resolutions, but by the activity and campaigns of the NPI in the days and weeks ahead.

The New Politics Initiative (www.newpolitics.ca), which made its debut at the convention of the New Democratic Party (Canada’s social democratic party) in Winnipeg last weekend, could be one of the most innovative and significant developments on the left in Canada in a long time.
NPI argued that the NDP had to open itself to the new forces of the anti-globalization movement by initiating the formation of a new party.
As someone who has given up on the NDP more than once in my long political career, I feel a greater sense of optimism today that a new kind of political party that brings together most of the forces fighting for social justice is a real possibility.

The idea for a youth politics show was first raised more than a year ago after concerns were raised about the difficulty in getting under-45s interested in political programmes.

Central to the NPI’s political project was the inchoate notion of a left political party "working with" the social movements.
At the level of the state, this was reflected in the third key piece of the NPI’s political agenda: participatory democracy, which served as a strategy for transforming the state towards economic as well as political democracy.
This absence of a coherent new theoretical framework or frameworks for left activism, encompassing long-term goals and critiques of traditional political theories, remains a key weakness.

The New Democrats are undergoing a process of renewal in the wake of last year’s federal election in which they garnered less than 10 per cent of the vote nationally.
Not surprisingly, some see this as a maneuver to recruit new members to the NDP without a strategy for building on the ground, or outside the NDP if the resolution should fail to pass at convention.
The NPI should state clearly that it will break from the NDP and form a new party if the NDP is unwilling to embrace the anti-capitalist movement and build an activist party based upon the day-to-day struggles of working people and the oppressed.

Many people questioned for the BBC research found it difficult to relate politics to their everyday lives, and felt there was no dialogue between themselves and parliament.

It's a political idea about what a new party could and should be: more internally democratic, committed to electoral reform, tied to grassroots movements (www.newpolitics.ca.).
Genuinely new politics would mean bringing together communities that have nothing to do with the Canadian left as it looks today - either with the NDP, or the mass street protests like those that took place in Quebec City.
To overcome these divisions, what is needed is not a new political party - not yet -- but a new political process, one with enough faith in democracy to let a political mandate emerge.

He was elected AFL-CIO president to head a new leadership; he beat the drums for organizing; he called upon affiliates to put forces in the field; he recruited hundreds of eager students for demonstrative summers of organizing.
Extensive resistance is unavoidable: on the one hand, from grassroots local leaders and rank-and-file activists who would welcome an effective program to organize the unorganized but want a voice in running their own unions; on the other hand, from complacent, entrenched office holders who simply distrust any program of action, good or bad.
That is, not politics in the narrow sense of electing Democrats instead of Republicans, or maneuvering cleverly between them, or beefing up labor's standard political action program, but politics as broad social policy.

Overall, the reaction was positive, even from the Socialist Caucus of the NDP, which stands to be overtaken by this new initiative of party insiders and outsiders.
But the discussants also note that the program of the New Politics Initiative (outlined at www.newpolitics.ca), which includes reform of the party to make it more responsive to the wishes of the grassroots as well as changing the election finance system to ban corporate donations, is one that they, too, could support.

The NPI said that we need a new kind of political party on the left, one that is rooted in social movements and practices a new kind of participatory democracy.

Yet the most successful left-wing political party in the world at the moment, the Workers Party in Brazil shows us a different model of a party rooted in social movements that are at the same time independent from the party.
