New Rose Hotel is presented in a 1.85:1 widescreen transfer, which is not enhanced for widescreen televisions.

The virtual reality in New Rose Hotel is the very fabric of the film itself as Abel Ferrara cuts back and forth from scene to scene, then repeats moments over and over again aimlessly.
Indeed, Dafoe and Argento are seen in lazy hotel room mornings, swimming pool kisses and hallway smooches seemingly every couple of minutes for the duration of the movie.

"New Rose Hotel" stars Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe, and Asia Argento, (daughter for famed Italian Horror Director, Dario Argento,) as a trio of underworld denizens out to kidnap a geneticist who is worth billions to his corporate masters.
The good news about the film itself is that it is better than the last Gibson film adaptation to be released to DVD, Johnny Mnemonic, but not by much as far as the film itself is concerned.
They give insight into the background of all the talent involved and is probably the second strongest element on the DVD itself besides the feature length audio commentary by Writer Christ Zois.

New Rose Hotel is a strange, confusing concoction that undoubtedly will leave no lasting impression.
New Rose Hotel tells the story of two men, Fox and "X" (Christopher Walken and Willem Dafoe) involved in industrial espionage (apparently the get-rich-quick scheme of whenever this movie is set).
I consider this a grave offense, for I quite often turn on the subtitles to catch dialogue that is muddled, like most of the conversations in New Rose Hotel.

Not a lot happens in the way of action, the bulk of the film comprising much talky debauchery, X falling for Sandie, and Fox waxing poetic with continual streams of culturally-mixed metaphors about "the edge" and "corporate evictors." It's not ground-breaking stuff, but it is frequently atmospheric.
By eschewing the o-wow approach for a more matter-of-fact near future, New Rose Hotel imparts a disquieting feeling that, unlike the explosive fantasy of James Bond movies, this sort of ruthless treachery could be going on all the time.
Not a classic -- it's a bit too slow and methodical -- but worth a rent for fans of the genre, if just to enjoy Walken's typically invigorating performance.

The problem with the film, as an original and diverting story as it is, is that it is too confusing to follow and suffers from a sense that it is too "hip" for its own good.
Things work out too well for the two raiders: Hiroshi leaves his wife and goes with Sandi to Marrakech, and is given a science lab specially built for him.
But something mysterious soon happens and the last 20 minutes of the film repeats what happened so far, but adding new details and a different way of looking at it.

What really impressed me about New Rose Hotel was how you felt like a voyeur seeing couples in their intimate moments in hotels, etc....
Asia has said that working with a director like Abel and her father were quite different experieces being that Abel likes to work with at least three camera set ups and run through the whole scene in one take while her father breaks it all up into little bits.
I like "New Rose Hotel", but it's not a favorite Asia movie of mine.

The effects in "New Rose Hotel" are no better than they need to be to tell the story, thank God.
If you think "New Rose Hotel" is exasperating, I invite you to check out the 1960s television series "The Prisoner," also somewhat unfairly thrown into the science-fiction bin because of certain cosmetic touches...
Now look people I know this isn't the Matrix and it's not the best movie out there but I did read the story New Rose Hotel and the movie was closer to the story than Johnny Mnemonic did and beside anything with Chris Walken in it is worth atleast giving it a try.

Those looking for a conventional narrative may be stumped as portable video units and handheld camera-phones advance most of the plot, but for adventurous viewers willing to actively engage it, this unique mix of breathy eroticism and technological paranoia is highly seductive.
