		Cohen at this time was going through a period of extreme personal depression and writer's block (which would culminate in the Phil Spector collaboration on Death of A Ladies' Man), and songs such as Field Commander Cohen and A Singer Must Die attest to his state of mind at the time.
		A deep, dark, driving masterpiece with just the right amount of light touch, New Skin For The Old Ceremony is a great album, and an essential purchase for any admirer of Leonard Cohen.

		My personal favourites are Songs of Love and Hate and New Skin for the Old Ceremony because I feel it's there Cohen is at the height of his songwriting powers.
		Recommended for lovers of folk with the caveat that you are interested mostly in interesting lyrics and delivery rather than polish.
		I've been listening to this album since I was ten years old, and I still love the songs.

		I certainly won't be spending much time on the philological analysis of the rest of these tunes, though, since it wouldn't be as much true philological analysis as it would be a frustratingly futile search of the one right interpretation - but it does seem to me that the general tendency is "bitter social commentary".
		Cohen himself probably understood that, and New Skin turned out to be his last album in the 'introspective quiet singer-songwriter vein'; on his next release, he would fully branch out into smudgey adult pop territory.
		The puzzling thing is, the old boy got somewhat deeply obsessed with sexuality this time, and just about every song on here either deals with problems of (often dirty) sex directly or contains an oblique hint at the problem anyway.

		Cohen still isn't much of a singer, and his 60s rugged individualist brand of sexism is continually evident, starting with the back cover photo of a chick in a towel doing his typing.
		But he breaks away from love songs for a few larger comments that are difficult to understand and generally worth the effort ("Story Of Isaac," "A Bunch Of Lonesome Heroes," "The Old Revolution"), and his love songs are decent as well ("Seems So Long Ago, Nancy").
		Despite all that, he does still have an enviable talent for soul-baring confession that doesn't seek refuge in rationalization or topple over into self-pity, and as long as he can produce even a single gem like the abject yet assertive "That Don't Make It Junk," I'm glad Cohen's still in the game.
