New South Wales is bounded by the Pacific Ocean on the E., by Queensland on the N., by South Australia on the W. and by Victoria on the S. It lies between 28° and 38° S. lat., and 141° and 154° E. long.
In the extreme south-east of New South Wales, at the head of the Genoa river, are sandstones with Archaeopteris howitti, which are an extension of the Lower Devonian beds of Victoria; while farther to the east, at Eden and Twofold Bay, are Upper Devonian sandstones.
In 1851, when separate autonomy was granted to Victoria, New South Wales had a population of 187,243, the annual imports were £2,078,338, the exports £ 2,399,5 80, the revenue was £575,794, and the colony contained 1 3 2,437 horses, 1,738,965 cattle and 13,059,324 sheep.

CityRail is the name of the extensive system of urban, suburban and intercity railways based on metropolitan Sydney, the capital city of the State of New South Wales in Australia.
The railway formed the basis of the "New South Wales Government Railways" and was owned by the Government from the outset.

The requirements of the New South Wales Railways for supplies of good steaming coal, of which Lithgow had in abundance, and steel for the construction and maintenance of the rail network provided the catalyst for the industrialisation of Lithgow.
Proposals by the NSW Railways associated with the electrification of the line were to provide asignificant impetus, particularly for the development of Wallerawang.

The Railway Act of 1887 terminated the obligatory conditions of the 1884 Civil Service Act, contributors being given the option of remaining members of the fund, or of withdrawing and effecting life insurance.
In 1904 the idea was revived and several committees were constituted to formulate a new scheme, the main one being that under the chairmanship of Mr.
It is not possible to recall the bad years, and by new methods, to wipe out the accumulated deficits, but it is possible to alter the conditions of the fund so that the rights of present and future contributors will be conserved without an unwieldy burden being placed on the State Treasury.

The 38 class locomotives were designed by the New South Wales Government Railways, under the leadership of Harold Young, last of the railways' Chief Mechanical Engineers of the steam era.
It was subsequently set aside for preservation in 1967 by the Department of Railways and then sold to the Museum by the State Rail Authority of NSW for a nominal amount ($10).
Restoration of the locomotive began in August 1992 and was jointly undertaken by the Museum and 3801 Limited, operators of steam locomotive 3801.

The 32 class locomotives became one of the most successful and versatile locomotives on the New South Wales rail system and their numbers were added to repeatedly over the next 19 years until a total of 191 were built.
Due to the light track on the New South Wales system, the class was restricted to a maximum speed of 40 mph (64 km/h) until 1905, after which time this restriction was gradually relaxed.
They were the obvious choice to haul the Royal Train in New South Wales for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in May and June 1901 for the opening of Federal parliament in Melbourne.

The first five locomotives were built in the Clyde Railway Workshops and wore distinctive streamlined boiler casing.
The remaining 25 locomotives were built at the New South Wales Government Railway Workshops at Eveleigh, New South Wales (13 locomotives) and NSWGR Workshops at Cardiff in Newcastle (12 locomotives).
It is now in a stripped condition, with some parts at the Dorrigo Steam Railway and Museum while others are at the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum.

 Steam Trains in Australia
They were built under the New South Wales Railways Chief Mechanical Engineer, Harold Young with the first five being built by Clyde Engineering Co. between 1943 and 1945 under Wartime conditions.
It was was purchased by the privately run minerals carrying railway -- The Emu Bay Railway in June 1962 to became no.20A, (pictured below) as the replacement of their locomotive no.20 of the same class, which was wrecked in a downhill runaway on the long grade approaching Burnie on February 20 1962.
M6, of a class of 10 similar 4-6-2s, is here in original green livery, and is shown departing Devonport for Burnie after changing locomotives from the H shown in the previous picture.

To the right, rear of where I was standing were the exchange sidings where J. and A. Brown's private railway exchanged coal hoppers with the New South Wales Government Railways for around 110 years.
The four wheel hoppers on this train are headed south to the coal loader at Port Waratah.

New South Wales Goverment Railways (NSWGR) was the first State Rail network to have the post WW2 Fairmonts on their rails.
It would appear that the M19's were so successful that a single order of seventy was placed in 1951 and these were shipped out in January 1952.
It is pleasing to note that in the year,2006, numerous examples of the NSWGR M19's survive with many in near original condition.

Between Bathurst and Orange on the main western line sits the tiny locality of Tumulla - last time I was there it consisted of a few scattered farms, a passing loop and a typical New South Wales Railway's skillion roofed signal box.
Such a humble spot on the map and yet a hot spot for railway action and a magnet for railway photographers because it is the location of Tumulla Bank - one of the fiercest grades in New South Wales.
In the days of steam the norm was to double head trains with the helper coming on at Georges Plains and not coming off till the train reached Wimbledon.
