New South Wales is Australia’s premier state in more ways than one: it’s not only the oldest of the five states, but it’s the most densely populated too.
Including Sydney, New South Wales covers an area about twice the size of Britain, with roughly a tenth of its population; not a very big state by antipodean standards, but its six and a quarter million residents constitute one-third of the country’s population.
South of Sydney the coast is relatively undeveloped, and there’s a string of low-key family resorts and fishing ports, great for water sports and fishing.

In the mid 90's much of the Cataract River flow disappeared into the cracks in the river bed and methane and ethane gasses were expelled from the cracks, measuring up to 20 litres per second in some areas.
Rivers SOS wants some more responsible process to be put into place, but meanwhile we will continue to campaign for our 1 km safety zone around rivers.

For the purposes of this assessment, river health is usually defined in terms of ecological integrity and is used to give a measure of the overall condition of a river ecosystem.

The Pieman River was assessed as being severely impaired; however, this assessment could be biased as the test sites were affected by mining activities and did not provide a representative picture of the whole catchment.
