One of New Ulm's best-known attractions is the Hermann Monument, commonly known as "Hermann the German".
Architect and builder Julius Berndt of New Ulm was the first to conceive the idea of erecting a Hermann Monument in the U.S. When he started speaking of the idea, it turned out that several other cities throughout the country wanted the monument themselves.
Herman arrived in New Ulm in July of 1890, and the monument was dedicated in September of 1897.
