He joined the New Wafd Party when it was formed in 1977, because he thought that the party, besides its historical record, and not only because of it, has a useful role to play in Egypt's second experiment with a multi-party system.
He is therefore likely to realise that the New Wafd cannot overcome its present crisis by reminding Egyptian citizens continually of its glorious struggle against the British and the monarchy, and that it must adapt to the new conditions prevailing in Egypt at the beginning of the 21st century.

Egyptian nationalist political party that was the leading political organization of the country between World War I and the Nasser revolution (1918- 1952), and central in the work for establishing Egyptian independence.
Wafd proved to be far more effective than other political groups to get popular support against British presence in Egypt, and exercised their power through demonstrations and riots in addition to participation in normal elections.
