New Woman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New Woman was a feminist ideal which emerged in the final decades of the 19th century in Europe and North America.
Heavily opposed by conservatives, the New Woman movement started to fade away in the course of the First World War when, due to a shortage of "manpower", many women took on jobs and when, shortly after the war, universal suffrage was achieved.
New Woman is an international group of men and women who "seek to create and promote a positive current of thought and action in favor of women".

New Woman, from The New Morality and the Working Class
A woman who voluntarily dismisses the longed-for encounter with the beloved with its promise of joy, only because she is used to doing her writing in the morning, only because she is pained at the thought of these lost hours taken from work.
For the woman of the past, the infidelity or the loss of her beloved was the worst possible disaster, in imagination and in fact.
The psychology of the new, independent, single woman, according to type, is reflected in the image of the rest of her contemporaries: the traits of women, who belong to the army of those earning their own livelihood, formed by life itself, by degrees also begin to be the hallmark of the others.

The new feminism had ideologically grown out of the left of the political spectrum; it was first espoused by women who were familiar with socialism and who had advantage of bourgeois backgrounds but identified with working classes and hoped for the elimination of class oppression.
New feminists celebrated female sexuality and asserted women's "sex rights." Sex outside marriage was a kind of behavioral outlawry that appealed to new feminists' desires to overturn conventionality.
New feminists sought the emancipation of woman as a human being and as "sex-being," creature of her special nature.

As illustrated by these plays, the conflict most commonly occurred over such issues as the double standard, the advent of the New Woman and turn-of-the-century feminism, and the conflict between a woman’s desire to work and her role in marriage.
