New World rats and mice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New World rats and mice are a group of related rodents found in North and South America.
The New World rats and mice are often considered part of a single subfamily, Sigmodontinae, but the recent trend among muroid taxonomists is to recognize three separate subfamilies.
Some molecular phylogenetic studies have suggested that the New World rats and mice are not a monophyletic group, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Rodents are vectors for bubonic plague, rat bite fever, leptospirosis, hantavirus, trichinosis, infectious jaundice, rat mite dermatitis, salmonellosis, pulmonary fever, and typhus.
Rats will bite babies in their cribs, because the smell of milk or other food on the baby is attractive to a rat looking for food.
Rats are nocturnal, but in areas having large rat populations some low ranked rats will forage during the day, because they have been denied access to food at night.

 Rodent Control & Prevention
Rats and mice have accompanied man to most of the areas of the world that he has settled.
Rats and mice are responsible for spread of a number of diseases, either directly, as by contamination of human food with their urine or feces, or indirectly, by way of rodent fleas and mites.
Examples of populations are the rats within a city block, those in a sewer, the rats infesting a farm, or those living in or around a feed mill.

Tacaribe complex viruses are generally associated with the New World rats and mice.
The LCM/Lassa complex viruses are associated with the Old World rats and mice.
Some Old World arenaviruses appear to be passed from mother rodents to their offspring during pregancy, and thus remain in the rodent population generation after generation.

Mated pairs are intolerant of other grasshopper mice, and vocal signals may serve to space the population.
Northern grasshopper mice are highly vocal and give a variety of barking sounds, as well as a high-pitched "howl".
As the name implies, they eat great numbers of grasshoppers as well as other invertebrates, but they are also active predators of other small rodents, which they stalk, grasp with their long claws, and kill with a bite of their long, sharp incisors at the base of the prey's neck.

 Technical: Ecology | CDC Hantaviruses
All hantaviruses known to cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) are carried by New World rats and mice of the family Muridae, subfamily Sigmodontinae.
Other hantaviruses associated with sigmodontine rodents and known to cause HPS include New York virus, which is hosted by the white-footed mouse; Black Creek Canal virus, which is hosted by the cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus; and Bayou virus, which is hosted by the rice rat, Oryzomys palustris.
Recent studies have confirmed that infected deer mice are present in every habitat type--from desert to alpine tundra, although the prevalence of infection is higher in certain middle-altitude habitats.

Newborn mice given Prozac grow up depressed - 26 October 2004 - New Scientist
Mice treated with the antidepressant Prozac early in life grow into adults with emotional problems, a new report concludes.
Nine weeks after their last injection, the adult animals were given a series of behavioural tests designed to assess their level of anxiety and depression.
The team found that rodents who received drug as newborns were more intimidated by new surroundings and moved more slowly to avoid painful shocks compared to controls.

Quail Ridge Reserve - Mammals Rodents
The two rat species are in the size range of the woodrat (e.g., 100-350 and 200-500 g (3.53-12.35 and 7.06-17.64 ounces) for the fl and Norway rats, respectively), however, unlike the woodrat, these two species do not have hairy tails; they are naked and scaly.
Black rats are smaller than Norway rats, and the tail in the former is longer than the head and body length, whereas it is generally somewhat shorter in the latter species.
Harvest mice are particularly common in grasslands and chaparral.

Rice rat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The rice rats are various species in the Oryzomyini tribe of New World rats.
When trying to give the rice rats a monophyletic meaning, the term is usually used to refer to the species of the Oryzomys genus.
the Dusky Rice Rat), Oligoryzomys (the pygmy rice rats) and Microryzomys (the small rice rats) have "rice rat" in their common names so it is usual now to think of the rice rats as a vernacular term for a paraphyletic grouping of rats found in southern North America, Central and South America.

Working kidney grown in mouse - 23 December 2002 - New Scientist
Complete working kidneys have been grown in mice using stem cells derived from human and pig fetuses.
The Israeli team, who used three-month-old mice as recipients for the growing kidneys, were able to avoid immune rejection by using embryonic stem cells.
The developing kidney takes time to acquire 'antigen presenting cells' which are recognised by the host immune system as foreign.
