New York Auto Show Turns 100 - Popular Mechanics
During the week of that show, many persons received their first ride in an automobile, riding around that ring." While a cheap, reliable car for common folk was still a distant dream of Henry Ford, New York's society swells seemed to smile upon the proceedings, their snowy shirt fronts and elegant evening gowns inspiring comparison to the horse show that, ironically, took place at the Garden the following week.
The show at the Garden sped up the use of sturdy wood-spoked wheels over spindly wire ones and the use of smooth, multicylinder motors mounted under a hood up front over sputtering, single-cylinder engines mounted underneath the driver's seat.
