Upper New York Bay, sometimes called Upper New York Harbor or the Upper Bay, is the northern area of New York Harbor inside the Narrows.
It is connected to Lower New York Bay by the Narrows, to Newark Bay by the Kill Van Kull, and to Long Island Sound by the East River, which despite the name, is actually a tidal strait.
The reef was historically one of the largest oyster beds in the world and provided a staple for the diet of all classes of citizens of New York City until the end of the 19th century, when the beds succumbed to pollution.

Lower New York Bay is the section of New York Bay outside of the Narrows and open directly to the Atlantic Ocean.
Besides the Hudson River (which empties in to the Lower Bay through the Narrows), the bay is fed by the Arthur Kill and the Raritan River, as well as by several smaller streams.
The section of the bay near the confluence of the Arthur Kill and the Raritan is called Raritan Bay.
