NEW YORK CITY--When Lincoln Kirstein raced out of the Metropolitan Opera House immediately after a dress rehearsal of the Kirov Ballet's production of Theme and Variations in 1989, Francia Russell panicked.
On Friday, January 5, before that evening's performance of Balanchine's Serenade, NYCB ballet master in chief Peter Martins took the stage, holding a bottle of vodka and the glass he said Kirstein had used when he joined Martins for a drink at the end of each day.

NEW YORK Nov 10, 2006 (AP)— Three summers ago, the New York City Ballet returned to St. Petersburg, Russia, 20 years after the death of the troupe's visionary co-founder, George Balanchine, who was born there.
On one level, the title "Bringing Balanchine Back" is a straightforward description of NYCB's return to Russia, which is captured in the film through a mix of interviews, performance excerpts and always-entertaining backstage footage.
On another, not-so-subtle level, the title echoes the subtext driven home throughout the documentary: how well NYCB is thriving two decades after Balanchine died, leaving his company with an incredible wealth of ballets and an enormous pair of shoes to fill.

NEW YORK -- A jubilant atmosphere at the State Theater Tuesday, as the New York City Ballet kicked off this glorious nine-week season of performances to celebrate the late George Balanchine's centennial and his legacy.
As Gounod (and conductor Hugo Fiorato) wakes up the brass and percussion sections, the maidens did indeed race, and were indeed beautiful with their silky tresses flowing behind 'em, but the musical and choreographic escalation toward this climax seemed almost comically steep.
But as Ellen Barr, Saskia Beskow, and Gwyneth Muller began the ballet in their long white gloves with that quirky, coded movement vocabulary, I couldn't shake that impulse to see the Balanchine amongst the strong performances onstage.
