The New York City Criminal Court is the begining level trial court of criminal cases in the City of New York.
Judges of the Criminal Court are appointed by the Mayor of New York to a 10 year term.
Several Criminal Court Judges are designated as Acting Justices of the New York State Supreme Court.

Court administrators are proud of the 75-percent completion rate for sanctions for community service, which they say exceeds that of other busy urban courts.
Other criminal justice leaders in the city were publicly discussing the potential value of neighborhood magistrate's courts to deal with low-level offenses--a system that had existed in the city until courts were centralized in 1962--and the police department was aggressively implementing community policing.
Of the new cases, about half are "on- line" arraignments of people arrested and held at the court during the previous 24 hours; the other half are people at liberty who come to court after being issued "desk appearance tickets" by the police.

The Supreme Court is the trial court of unlimited original jurisdiction, but it generally hears only cases that are outside the jurisdiction of other trial courts of more limited jurisdiction and appeals.
There are approximately 2,200 town, village and city courts and 61 counties, for an average of 36 courts per county.
Case information from the courts in the five boroughs of New York (Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens and Richmond) and the counties of Dutchess, Erie, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester is available from the OCA for these jurisdictions.

Court TV lost its bid to reverse New York State's ban on cameras in the courtroom as the state's highest court ruled there is no consitutional right to televise court proceedings.
Court TV sued the state and the Manhattan District Attorney's office in 2001, arguing the ban is an infringement on protected freedoms and tells news organizations how to gather the news.
New York's death penalty was reinstated in 1995 by the Legislature and the newly elected Pataki who had vowed, as part of his successful campaign to oust then-Democratic Gov. Mario Cuomo, to bring capital punishment back.
