The volunteer Fire Department continued to protect the lives and property of the citizens of the city until after the close of the Civil War when, in 1865, they were superseded by the paid Metropolitan Fire Department.
New Year's day 1898 heralded the consolidation of the different areas of the city and the beginning of a new era for the Fire Department.
The department is administered by the Fire Commissioner appointed by and responsible to the Mayor.

According a survey of the New York Police Department by the public advocate, 18 percent of police officers are Latino (compared to 3.2 percent in the Fire Department who are Latino), 17 percent African American (3.8 percent fls in the Fire Department) and 15 percent women (0.3 percent women in the Fire Department).
The New York Times reported that the group also found that the $400 cost of required defibrillator training is a barrier to some low-income applicants and recommended that the city pay for the class.
The Fire Academy graduation class in November 2000, which included 139 Emergency Medical Technicians and paramedics tapped for promotion to the Fire Department, was 2.9 percent Asian, 10.7 percent fl, 14.3 percent Hispanic and 4 percent female.

A complex set of rules determines when a fire company is available for a first responder call, and a fire unit responds to a medical emergency only if there are no other fire units in their area which are already involved in an emergency run.
It would be preferable to connect future pay increase for firefighters to a real restructuring of the Fire Department and a substantial revision of the duties of the firefighter to place greater emphasis on fire prevention and education.

New York imported its first two fire engines from Richard Newsham of England in 1731 They were made of wood with a pump that was operated in a see-saw fashion.
In 1737 the Volunteer Department of the City of New York was established with an act calling for "the appointment of able, discreet, and sober men who shall be known as Firemen of the City of New York, to be ready for service by night and by day and be diligent, industrious and vigilant."
In 1798 the department was reorganized as The Fire Department of the City of New York, with the added right to raise money for themselves and for widows and orphans of firefighters.

At ground zero on Sept. 11, one emergency official who did not have a fire department radio could not broadcast an alert that the north tower was in danger of collapsing.
The new radios can be programmed to operate on dozens of radio channels, preventing the fire department's usual single fire-scene channel from being congested during a large-scale incident such as the trade center attack.
