New York City is also the home of the four major U.S. television networks, ABC, CBS the Fox Network, and NBC, as well as news organization CNN, and while the local film industry is dwarfed by that of Hollywood, its billions of dollars in revenue make it the second largest in the nation.

The bridge, built by the city of New York in 1939, connects the Penny Bridge section of Queens with the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn.
The design of the new superstructure, which consists of two parallel box girders, allowed for the bridge to be built in two stages, minimizing disruptions to both commuters and community residents.
If a new span were to be built, it would have a clearance of 90 feet (less than the current 125 feet) in order to improve sight distances and ease congestion on the expressway, and to accommodate the existing traffic on Newton Creek.

On Aug. 22, 1958, Interstate 178 was New York's submitted proposal for a freeway from today's I-278, over the Manhattan Bridge, to the proposed Lower Manhattan Expressway (to be part of I-78).
Plans for a longer I-278 in New York and New Jersey were cancelled, leaving the route truncated at both ends.
On Aug. 22, 1958, the New York Department of Public Works submitted a multi-route proposal including an Interstate 178 expressway, leading from today's I-278, over the Manhattan Bridge, and connecting to the proposed Lower Manhattan Expressway (to be part of I-78).

New York, NY, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- The Purchasing Management Association of New York said Tuesday business conditions in the New York metro area improved in August for the 12th consecutive month.
The index was at 278.3 in March 2001, the last month of the 10-year expansion and had fallen to 246.2 in November 2001, the month that the National Bureau of Economic Research deems that the national recession bottomed out.
"Business conditions apparently continue to improve in August, still the breadth of the improvement is somewhat more muted this month, compared with July, echoing the latest state-wide findings in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's August business survey," the report said.
