In 1801 the Secretary of the Navy authorized the purchase of the yard, henceforth establishing the New York Navy Yard.
In the 1900s the yard, known by its workers and neighbors as the "Brooklyn Navy Yard", drew from the vast population pool of the New York metropolitan area.
Due to the hostilities abroad, the yard's workforce increased to 22,000, and at this point the yard was valued at $300 million.

The New York Naval Shipyard (NYNSY), also known as the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the New York Navy Yard and United States Navy Yard, New York, is located 1.7 miles northeast of the Battery on the Brooklyn side of the East River in Wallabout Basin, a semicircular bend of the East River.
The Navy Yard was established by the federal government in 1801.
Now the Yard has over 200 tenants with more than 3500 employees, and is managed and operated by the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation for the City of New York.

It was converted to a breechloader at Washington Navy Yard in June 1880, reducing its weight from 5,400 to 5,242 pounds.
It was inventoried at New York Navy Yard and evidently saw no service prior to February 1876 when it was sent to West Point Foundry for conversion to an 8-inch rifle via insertion of a steel sleeve with 15-groove rifling of right hand twist.
It was assigned new Registry Number 11 as an 8-inch rifle, inspected by Francis J. Higginson, and returned to New York Navy Yard.

She then visited New York City from 28 to 31 May 1913 for the festivities surrounding the dedication of the monument honoring the battleship Maine, destroyed in Havana harbor on 15 February 1898.
She was docked at New York for repairs between 16 September and 2 October and then ran a full-power trial as she headed south to Norfolk to resume exercises off the Virginia capes before sailing for Europe on 25 October 1913.
Departing New York on 26 January 1925, the battleship conducted battle practice in Cuban waters, out of Guantanamo Bay, and then transited the Panama Canal on 14 February to join the Battle Fleet for exercises along the coast of California.

The Yard has three piers, owned by the City of New York and operated by Seatrain Shipbuilding and Coastal Drydock and Repair Corporation, and a total of 10 berths ranging from 350 to 890 feet long, with ten-foot deck height and 25 to 40 feet of depth alongside.
A Federal project maintains a channel depth of 35 feet from Throgs Neck to the Yard, about two miles from the western entrance, and thence 40 feet of depth to the deep water in the Upper Bay.
Access to the piers requires passage under the Manhattan Bridge (a suspension open with a clearance of 134 feet) and the Brooklyn Bridge (a suspension span with a clearance of 127 feet).

The new battleship took part in a fleet review by President William H. Taft in the Hudson River off New York City on 14 October 1912, and received a visit from the Chief Executive that day.
Resuming her duty with the fleet soon thereafter, she operated from Maine to the Caribbean; on 5 September 1927, she was present at ceremonies unveiling a memorial tablet honoring the French soldiers and sailors who died during the campaign at Yorktown in 1781.
That battleship, along with USS New York, and the light cruiser USS Brooklyn (CL-40) provided the heavy escort for the convoy.

From 1833 to 1843 he was assigned to the New York (later Brooklyn) navy yard, where he pioneered in the application of steam power to warships, commanding (1837) the Fulton, first steam vessel in the U.S. navy, and encouraged the broadening of naval education.
Promoted to captain in 1837, Perry received the title of commodore in 1841 and in the same year became commandant of the New York navy yard.

In May 1917 the seized German passenger ship Kaiser Wilhelm II was towed to the New York Navy Yard, where she was to be refitted for U.S. Navy service.
At more than seven-hundred feet, the liner was considerably longer than any of the Navy's existing ships, and almost too long for the Yard's Dry Dock Number Four, where her underwater work was to be done.
There is only a few inches of clearance between her stem and the gauge on the base of the altar at the head of the dock.

USS New York, a 8150-ton armored cruiser built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was commissioned in August 1893.
She was in the North Atlantic Squadron when the Spanish-American War began, and was flagship during the Caribbean campaign that led to the Battle of Santiago on 3 July 1898.
Decommissioned for the last time in April 1933, she was laid up at Olongapo, Philippines, until scuttled in December 1941 to avoid the risk of capture by the Japanese.
